Of all the things we could be interested in what makes motor oil so interesting? It is a very fascinating subject though, much more so than I'd have ever imagined. A year ago I didn't even know what a UOA was, much less "nanofiber technology". Is it one of the few "manly" things left in the world? Just wondering what you guys think.

Well, even for some mechanical types, this can be viewed as something like the finer points of tiddlywinks

None of my motorhead friends care about it ..nor even the local SOPUS rep to the extent that I do. They just don't feel the need to know. They are doing their own version of "manly" stuff with other distractions (racing, etc.) and they feel well served by their current level of understanding of lubrication. Most of the people that I meet feel that they know enough about everything that they need to know about ..beyond that ..they just don't care (that sounded a little odd). That is, most people aren't "universally" critical of their environment. If something doesn't make sense to them ...and it doesn't immediately effect them, they could care less. I, OTOH, see something that doesn't make sense, and HAVE to know why I can't reason it out. I may not have the ability to do so, but it doesn't stop my desire.

I'm an educator and I believe in lifelong learning. Learning doesn't stop when you leave the classroom. BITOG has been a real education for me. I've always done my own oil changes but I never knew there was so much to learn about oil and I've only scratched the surface in the short time that I've been lurking here. It's interesting because it is so complex. There are so many variables to consider. There is pride in having knowledge that others don't have and pride in using that knowledge to take better care of our engines than others do.

This forum is sometimes like a chemistry class and sometimes like guys sitting around the garage shootin' the bull about cars.

Yeah, that's it exactly! There's so much to learn. But it is as you say, as if we are sitting around the garage "talkin' oil".

Me too! There's so much free knowledge on this board. I had no idea of the depth of the science of oil.

Enjoyment of learning? Yes. (I obsessively pushed the learning curve on Syn. oil years ago.) But also an enjoyment of optimization. Enjoyment of finding the limits of technology. I plan to take my cars out to their limits. I'll have as much fun doing this as the next guy will driving his new BMW. If you buy good engineering, why not exploit it for all it's worth. If you pay a premium for hi-tech oil, then find and exploit it's full capability.

So I'm on here getting trial and error data on where I might be able to take my $7 qt of technology.

And there is even a place for a guy like me who takes his .75 a quart of Havoline Synthetic technology... right to the oil fill hole

I have yet to verify that even one member here other than a Blackstone employee is a female. Therefore, having an oil hobby seems to be manly.

Well, that bolsters the notion that this is a manly thing ..that only men can do with other men in a manly way

I love cars and when I buy one, I want it to last as long as possible. I want it to perform "like new" as long as possible. Oil is the blood of the engine.
