That's it... all I got was the summary. Not a "marginal" or "slight" difference - it was a "considerable" difference... enough for them to suggest 3K OCI. I didn't get any more details. This was back in 1983.

Dad told me that one day "this" car would be mine if I helped him every time he had to work on it. From age 5 up, I was underneath handing wrenches, scraping grease, etc... Built mower engines from parts (for fun) and did all the auto care at home. Was not brand-frenzied on oil, just reasonable about maint intervals. My 'rents bought stripped-level cars and drove them into the ground. They'd get freebies from grandparents and drive these g-awful beaters into the ground. Dad was a Dr. and they wouldn't let him park some of them in the hospital parking lot because they looked so bad. I respect that he didn't fit the norm - many (not all) docs in my hometown always drove the newest, nicest, and lived in the biggest, nicest... There was pressure to conform to that, I suspect.

Anyways, we didn't live in the best part of town... it was nice enough, but, very near some very bad parts. One day we are driving through one of the nicest parts of town. I'm looking at the monster houses, beautiful cars in the driveway. Our windows are down b/c there's no A/C. I said, "I'll bet these people don't do their own car work, you know, repairs, oil changes." Dad says something like, "Then it would surprise you to know just how many people out here have done it and how many likely still do." I was very quiet at that point. It made sense in a way I hadn't considered, and I felt a little bad about judging by appearances.

Sometime around then I started paying a bit more attention. When I finally found myself in a nicer, newer vehicle, a '97 legacy 2.2 wagon, I really started to pay attention to what went in it. I'll tell you this, 10k mile OCIs on Mobil 1 10w30 and that engine was shiney-spotless inside at 100k miles.

Now I always maintained my vehicles well. But something happened a few years ago and now I find myself on this site every week. There's got to be a connection. I bought used a '98 Chrysler minivan from someone I knew. Drove it and it seemed fine. Didn't check any fluids at the time. It had an ext factory warranty. They said they maintained it. Bought it, took it home and pulled the dipstick--no oil. Put in 2 quarts---didn't register. Put in just shy of 4 quarts. Needless to say, I stewed about that engine for almost 3 years. Worried about the wife and kids in it. Got to the point I sold it for cheap because it bothered me bad. This is before I knew about used oil analysis, Group I thru V, ZDDP etc. I became a bit oil OCD because I was just waiting for that 3.8 mopar to blow. Now I am compelled to find the right oil, OCI, ATF, coolant for every application that I own. I began to believe I maybe had OCD issues--until I found bitog and you guys. Now I know I am only slightly OCD. Thank you everyone. Still, when I grow up, I want to be Doug Hillary.

When I bought a brand new car in late 2005 and realized that there was a method to this madness of motor oil. My car has been running like a million bucks since..

My 20 y/o MALE cousin is still ~afraid~ to open the hood on his car. His brother does automotive on a par with myself.

My obsession began when I typed into the google search "Chrysler 2.7L". After hours of reading a multitude of blogs and web pages regarding horror stories of this engine, I became slightly OCD. My next search was "oil sludge", which led me back to many of the previous pages I had already read. However, there was one shining beacon of hope... it was BITOG. My wife still goes into a frenzy when friends mention anything concerning auto maintenance. "Oh God... here he goes about his little oil freak web site thingy!" You must admit anyone stumbling upon this thread not knowing anything about this site would be quite amused. After a couple hundred posts and reading hundreds of threads, it boils down to using a SM rated oil at spec'd weight, and reasonable OCI's. None the less..... BITOG completes me.

I saw the Mobil frying pan commercial.

I had Internet access, and began researching the company. The more I read, the more impressed I was.

Years later, taking automotive mechanics, our teacher simultaneously lambasted FRAM filters (we had FRAM textbooks!) while praising Mobil 1. He ran it in his VW Diesels and had gone a million miles on the first one. He was well on his way there with the 2nd. With a 160Km commute each day, it didn't take long to rack the miles up.

I then started using the stuff and was amazed at how clean it kept things.

I started running it in lawn mowers, boats, my trike...etc. Every 4-stroke device I could get my hands on. I even paid to put it in our '32 Chris. At this point I though I was a little obsessed with it. And when I started changing out the power steering fluid in every Ford I could get my hands on with Mobil 1 ATF.... I realized it was more than a little.

Now, again, years later, I've discovered a site full of people with a similar obsession

My 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan, purchased new, used about .75 qts of oil in 1200 miles. I had always used Havoline. I began to do research about oil, figuring there might be something oil related that would cause or cure the problem. I stumbled across this sight and have been an oil addict ever since.

More important than motor oil, it wasn't until BITOG that I started getting OCD over flushing ps fluid, trans fluid, and brake fluid on a timely basis.

+1 I used to be so clueless on this stuff.

i have to credit my dad, he had me under his chevy V8s from around 12 years old changing oil 5 or 6 times a year (!!) All Pennzoil 10w30 conventional and fram filters lol. he's way more OCD than me, he'd change the oil every 2500 just for fun, well it made him feel better anyway and i guess it rubbed off.

i used to think he was crazy until every one of his cars lasted forever, he'd sell them well over 100K and they still ran great.
