What engine is easiest on oil?

I don't know if Pitbull is right about the Toyota V8 being easy on oil, but the Toyota V8 may just be the best engine of its type in the world. It does its job so well it just goes unnoticed. It's a solid lifer engine but the local Toyota dealership mechanics say they have never had to adjust the valves on one. This engine is one of the reasons I bought a 4Runner two years ago. This engine may not have the highest horsepower rating but it gets great gas mileage, produces good torque and is very smooth. And, finally you never hear of one of these engines getting plugged up with sludge. So, maybe, Pitbull is right...easy on oil.

Gee, I had a `90 Buick Park Avenue with a 3800 V6, I would have sworn they recommended 5w30 the year around at all temps.

Perhaps I'm thinking of the 3800 Series II. My dad owns a '96 Regal, and I've done nearly all the changes for him. I'm sure the manual said 10w30 above 0 deg F and 5w30 below 50 deg F. The oil filler cap recommends 10w30.
 
Geoff, I know very little about the Grand Nationals version of the 3.8 but modern transverse mounted Seires II and up 3.8's are not low pressure at all! THe facture service manual for my 1997 Buick Lasber requires 65 PSI of oil pressure above 1800 or 2500 RPM's I can not rember now. The presure reading must be done with the engine and oil at operateing temp.! The oil must be 10W30. I can not rember the spec. for idle oil presure but mine is 40PSI.

Now for a long time on a lot of applications GM used 6 psi as the idle cut off presure for warranty work! As long as the engine had 6 psi at idle and built pressure as the RPM's increased most dealers were instructed to tell the customer that it "Is not a durability issue." and send them on their way! 6-8 psi is usualy the area that you start to hear really noisey lifters!!
 
hi i can remember some good ones

1973 ford maverick straight six

1975 chevy malibu striaght six

1967 VW beetle 4 cyl, really good and almost indestructable

1979 datsun b210 4cyl, 300,000 miles

jeep 2.5 and 40 liter engines, really have to beat it, haveny blown one yet, easily get 200,000

and last ford crown vic 4.6 and 5.0 liter engine

Yes, I stand corrected. The engine has received a lot of updates, particularly in '95. The oil pressure is now spec'd at 60psi at 1850 rpm. Quite high. See: http://engine.firebirdv6.com/ .

The oiling system changed (to a high pressure system) at the introduction of the Gen III block for the '86 MY.

Thanks guys for the responses, very interesting. I was surprised to see GM3800 as a top rated engine, guess my own ignorance is showing. Why is the 3800 such a good engine? I've owned the Cummins and they are built to last and I've owned several Toyota's a 1985 22RE and an inline six cylinder in my FZJ80 95 Landcruiser, and now the 2004 4runner with the 4.7 V8. Guess I'm stuck on Toyota's. Also Wards rated the engine in my Wifes 2003 350Z as one of the top engines? Does anyone know what Wards uses to rate these engines?
 
The 3800 is a good engine because they started with a good design(the 215 V8) and kept improving it for 40 years. John is right, when you start from stratch you introduce a whole new batch of problems. Starting with an existing design rarely gets you a more reliable machine.

Don't take this to mean the 3800 is out of date or old. Not even the displacment has stayed the same, there have been huge changes along the way.

They have always recomended both 10w30 and 5w30 in the 3800. It usually just says 10w30 on the cap.

The owner's manual on the 2004 Impala I test drove reccomended 5W30...
 
My vote goes to any low-revving/low running temp. pushrod engines as being easiest on oil....probably why even 5w30 conventionals do so reasonably well in them.
 
I would vote for the 2.2 OHV 4-cylinder in the Chevrolet Cavalier/Pontiac Sunfire, 1995-2002. Never seem to hear of it loosing much oil, and it doesn't seem to dirty it too much, although I've only done 6k km changes so far.....

Each of these will last you WELL OVER 200k miles if all maintenance is followed.
 
GM couldn't seem to make up their mind on the whole 5w30 vs 10w30 with the 3800 Series II. Some will say 5w30 year round, some will say not to use it above 60F, and not to use 10w30 below 0F.
