my mower says i can use any 10w30 as long as its SJ Approved i noticed on the quakerstate i use in my trucks they dont say SJ anywere on it, it says API SM will that work?

SM should work for a mower that specs SJ.

The second letter -- the J in SJ, or the M in SM -- basically a version of the SAE's general motor oil guidelines. The first version was SA, then came SB, etc. Each one is designed to be backward-compatible, so you can use SM where SL is specified, SL where SJ is specified, etc.

The S in SJ or the rest stands for spark ignited, i.e., gasoline engine. The C in oils like CJ4 stands for compression engine i.e., diesels.

There were no SI or SK as both have trademarks on them. SI = Sports Illustrated and SK = SK Tools.

I read there was no SK because of a decision taken to avoid confusion with other things using those letters. Maybe they were thinking of "SK" tools? What I read didn't even hint at what SK may have been confused with, so who knows. SI was apparently skipped because of it being too close to the element SI.

Probably SO, SS, SU, could meet the same fate.

Ahhh. Thanks Johnny for the reasons...I was writing while you were.
