I would think Heavy Duty. Must be a diesel oil. What brand is it? What does it say the spec is? SL, SM, CF, CF-4?

some off brand at walmart....will have to check the spec.

Oh heck, I'm on a rip tonight so here's my tongue-in-cheek response:

You're all WRONG!!! It stands for "honest description"! Proof? Notice that it appears nowhere in the Mobil-1 product line at all.

Fire at will! I'm typing with one hand and zipping up the asbestos suit with the other.

Heavy Duty ensues a longer lasting oil, High Detergent means a stronger add pack which could mean again a longer lasting oil.

A heavier weight may eliviate that tick, not so much a HD oil.

Try a 10w40 or 5w40 if you run 5w30, 10w30.

If anything, i would think the opposite would be true. Assuming the OP has lifter tick due to crudded up hydro lifters, he needs a thinner oil, and he also needs to clean out his engine with an engine flush and multiple oil changes at low mileage intervals.

heavy duty or high detergent?

wondering about running it in my 92 Galant to get rid of the slight tick.

If you put SAE HD30 in your 1992 Galant it will not tick any longer. In fact, it wont even start any longer until May

Stick with a good quality SAE 10w30, use a safe engine flush and do several oil changes at low mileage intervals to get your engine cleaned up.

A very good 10w30 with good detergent properties and good quality at a low price would be Motorcraft 10w30 synthetic blend oil.

Very true, I figured it was mechanical wear so only the heavier weight would quiet them.

I would then suggest running a HDEO oil like Rotella, Delo, Delvac.

someone recommended a high mileage oil...but as far as i know, the seals are fine...would it be a waste?
