What do you think about Super Start Platinum AGM Group 48 (O'Reilly)

Well now I need a group 24 for my 05 Scion tC.

Went to Costco, got $109 back for the battery, less than 3 years old. They didn't have any in stock so time to visit Walmart!

Less than 1 volt

You got one of those 100 Amp load testers? Looks like? They are OK but the gold standard for real load testers is a carbon pile where you dial in 1/2 CCA wait for the beep and then read the voltage. Most have a couple of scales to allow crude temp compensation.

So why did closing the hood and waiting a minute allow the vehicle to fire right up?
Might not be related, could be a coincidence. Maybe it took awhile for the system to calibrate or reinitialize? Not really sure, it was a little unnerving to have the vehicle not start with a new battery and not know exactly why, but it is starting normally now.

It was all they had at O'Reilly's, I am not sure how the load tester works, but the first time I used it, it started smoking, so maybe there is a carbon pile inside?

They are fine. The warranty on the Super Start Platinums was recently increased from 3 years to 4 years which is nice. If they were junk and all dying at 3.5yrs they wouldn't have done that. Enjoy your new battery! I am big on shopping for batteries based on convenience/location, not brand.

I’ve used Super Start Platinums for years in my vehicles, mainly because the store is convenient. No complaints. But I will say they do not last as long in my wife’s car as she tends to leave the ignition in ON position listening to radio (with lights on) for extensive periods of time between appointments, etc. That definitely shortens life and could be a factor for fleet vehicles with lots of non-idle parking time.

It's just a big resistance load. The nice thing about the carbon pile is you can dial the load to be 1/2 the battery CCA. So 300 or 400 amps. The carbon pile load tester smells hot after using it.

Understand that group 48/H6 batteries fall under the European DIN standard. H5, H6, H7, H8, H9 etc, they all have very strict requirements for case dimensions, performance, construction and details. So regardless of brand, they will all look very similar with little variance other than case color, labels and a few minor details.

I believe your new battery is made by either Clarios or East Penn. If you can find the country of origin or manufacturer code, might give us more clues. Either brand should be fine. Clarios AGMs over the past couple years come from multiple sources across the world. USA, Mexico, Germany, Korea and China. East Penn are all made in the USA.

I have Clarios from Germany and Korea and work fine.
Did you perform a BMS reset after installing the new battery?

I did not and just looked it up. I'll give it a shot tomorrow:

For many Honda/Acura vehicles, a common method involves a specific sequence of actions:

  1. Turn the ignition on (but don't start the engine) with the parking brake off.
  2. Flash the high beam headlights 5 times.
  3. Press the brake pedal 3 times.
  4. Look for the battery light to flash to confirm the reset.

I bought a deka battery at the farm store. Just the other day I was in the Walmart neighborhood (I won’t go there) and saw a deka big rig heading to the loading dock. I still think a corner is cut somewhere to make up the profit loss East Penn takes

most ANY battery if kept charged will last a LONG time, even flooded if they fit. i removed a 10 YO flooded interstate in my 2011 fronty just because!! being close to several walmarts as well as east penns manufacturing about 60 miles i buy from wallys as most of theirs except small power equip are east penn.
