What do you like about changing oil and why?

I enjoy twisting off the 200degree filter off my F150, then getting it stuck between the rack, and sway links. Only to leave the filter there from the sheer heat, and have the oil drip onto my driveway, not the oil pan i thought was lined up correctly.

Aside from that, OCD as someone mentioned above. Also, the piece of mind that it was done with the products i chose for it.

I like the fact that I know exactly what products go into my car and that it's done correctly.
For example, something that most shops will not do is fill the new oil filter with oil before twisting it on.

whats nice about doing it your self, is first off you know the oil was draied and u put in the exact product you wanted. Second when you are under your vehicle you can look around and see if anything is leaking and just look around to make sure everything looks good. Most guys that change there oil rotate tires to and that is a great time to check your brakes. I hear all the time its not much cheaper to change your own oil.. Well inspecting your vehicle during those oil changes can save you thousands.

All this, plus if you buy your oil/filters on sale it is way cheaper. Not to mention the fact that I can do an oil change faster than driving one-way to the dealership. I like doing it, and my wife doesn't give me any chores when I'm under the car "saving the family some money". Half of that time is just staring up at the car, enjoying the music and learning every inch of my vehicle. It's a real stress reliever.

I like to change my oil because

I believe that vehicle manufacturers oil recommendations are based on the lowest common denominator, I want to select an oil that will suit the type of driving & conditions the vehicle will be experiencing whilst I own it.

And

I believe that vehicle manufacturers only care about making sure that the vehicle lasts only as long as the warranty, hence their ridiculously long OCI’s in the service schedule.

Recently took my mothers car to Grease Monkey for an oil change. Did not have ramps or jack stands at the time to do it myself. Total cost for the oil change was $46 for Pennzoil Conventional and Purolator filter.

Now I have a bunch of AAP TG filters ($1.45 a piece) for her car and a Walmart close by to do 4 OCI for the price I paid at Grease Monkey. Plus self accomplishment knowing the work is done correctly.

Now I need to teach my brother how not to buy conventional oil at full price. Last oil change, he paid $3.69 a qt x5 for Quaker State 5w30 at Checkers.
