What do you like about changing oil and why?

BITOG members are great guys but why do we care so much about what we do? What do you like about oil, filters, changing oil, etc.?

Something about servicing a finely-crafted piece of machinery and pouring in fresh oil does it for me, but I only change it once a year on each car, typically.

I think it's called OCD

I just enjoy working on cars in general. Mine only go to a mechanic when they have to. I like knowing it's done right or to my idea of right anyway...lol

I don't think any oil change tech is going to look after my car as good as I am.

It's the fact that I know things were done properly and the exact oil/filter I want was used. A bit OCD/Monk-ish, but there it is. It also gives me something to do on those lazy weekend mornings before the kids wake up.

When others change my cars oil, it often is not done to my standards; i.e - old stuff not drained long enough, overfilled with new oil , and, I'm never quite sure if they put in what they say they did. Also, I find that it is simply more convienient (and cheaper) for me to do my own changes in my garage rather to have to go somewhere else and wait.

To the pro, it's just another car; but it's my car so I want to make sure it's done to the best of the ability of the person doing the change. Not saying that I'm a better mechanic, especially since oil changes are about my limit, but at least I know if I screw something up, it's not going to be due to boredom or carelessness.

It's also a heck of a lot cheaper, especially when SOPUS is practically giving PP away for free.

And I have more of a sense of accomplishment after doing an oil change than I do after a week's worth of work behind my desk/computer screen.

Last time I paid someone to change oil they disconnected a cable near the oil filter to make the job easier, and refused to admit it or fix it after I drove back. So I developed a grudge against the entire oil change industry and never paid anyone for an oil change since then.

Saving money, for years I changed oil for only $2 supertech oil filter. Oil was free after rebate of course. Also, knowing the job is done right, and avoid the hideous upsale tactics at oil change places.

To me,it`s just pride in maintaining and owning a car. I`ve always had to work very hard for my possessions and I always take the best possible care of them. Especially my cars,I always take impeccable care of them,plus if you do the job yourself,you know it`s getting dome right.

My wife says I have OCD. Oil change disorder. I started chaqging oil at age 16 (in the 60's)and when I checked my parents two Pontiacs they both had about 10,000 miles on the oil. It was like "picking a zit" for me to get that old black oil out and to start taking better care of the cars. I like to be abe to decide myself what oil and filter to use in each veichle. When to change the oil. I like the changing process. I have enjoyed showing my boys how to do it. I like the satisfaction of doing it myself and not paying someone else and then having them do a poor job. It just plain makes me feel good all around.

its not just changing oil though, between the 01 grand prix and the 81 fairmont, i somehow manage to get a few hours of "time" in with my cars every week

I like changing oil and doing all the other maintenance on my car because when it hits some high mileage number that I'm looking for (500K KM / 300K miles) I know that it was because of my dedication and maintenance that the vehicle made it there and that is gratifying knowing I'm working towards such an achievement.

Ok... The above is B.S., I just like changing my oil.

I enjoy doing maintenance on my own car, that's the main reason. But also because I got tired of paying 25.00 for bulk oil and a cheapo filter.

For the same price, I can do it myself and use PP, Schaeffer's, and many others.

1.Basicly its 66% cheaper to do an oil change yourself!.
2. Its rewarding, and good to know you did it correctly.
3. Peice of mind knowing that you got what you paid for. I dont trust a oil change shop to give me the oil I paid for.
