What do you guys think of the Formula Shell 5w30 ?
I've used it in my last 2 oil changes, but this time I noticed it had an unusual odor. Did they change the formula ?
What do you guys think of the formula? I'm still trying to learn how to read a used oil analysis report.

Thanks,
Justin

I was thinking of using the SHELL 5w30 which is $1.27 a quart after rebate at RITE-AID . Have to buy six quarts to get rebate . So , would like more input on this oil as well , currently using PENNZOIL 5w30 and not sure if the SHELL is up to par with the regular PENNZOIL .

Smokey, do you have a Target store nearby? You can get it there for $1.79 a quart if you don't feel like messing with the rebate. Is it a mail-in rebate? As far as I know, it's a good oil for a great price. I'd use it

Buddy bought an 05 Honda Accord Coupe V6, took it too dealer to have oil changed. They installed Formula Shell 5w20... it was their bulk oil. Car ran fine for thousands of miles before trading it off on Shell. I am sure that several thousand Hondas are serviced at this dealer well maybe hundreds and the ones that are 5w20 spec and 5w30 spec probably got Formula Shell, you know most people aren't Bitogers and like my Buddy take whatever the dealar offers at service time for best price. So in conclusion, Formula Shell is serviceable oil...

yup , mail-in rebate , done it before w/ RITE AID and had success . RITE AID less than few blocks away too . Suppose could walk , not

Not the same formula as QS, but still a top notch oil for the budget conscious buyer. I'm seriously thinking about switching to it in my 300M after the Auto-RX treatment since Havoline doesn't seem to be doing too well for me--especially considering how expensive Havoline has gotten.

apparently you are
"currently" using Pennzoil Conventional
"currently" using pennzoil platnum
"currently" using pennzoil truck&suv
from what I have gathered.

was using S.U.V. blend , now regular PENNZOIL in PRIZM . Was using regular PENNZOIL in PRIUS , now using PLATINUM . Some people just don't get it , eh , DR.NO it all ?

can't look at TECHNICAL DATA sheet at SHELL for the "Clean Engine Formula" . Yeh think they're possibly making changes to it ?

Here was Terry's 07 "hints" on popular oils:

Quote:

FYI updated recent observations from actual testing:

Havoline - can attract moisture because of a ester component that is not always hygroscopically stable.

Motorcraft - if COP product under heavy valve train or cam pad wear testing will show more wear than others.

Pennzoil - good overall but wear control under severe stress can be less than stellar.

Chevron- Don't see much of the basic product anymore but what I do see looks a lot like Havoline.

Schaeffer- amazing product, better than their own bench testing shows and hats off to that company for producing excellent product!

Castrol - GTX formula changes so much recently I can't tell which supplier is making it!

QS is a sleeper is excellent wear control and in house competition between QS and Pennzoil keeps this a good bet for low wear but watch out if draining longer.

Shell- another sleeper that depends on which part of the country you are in. Overall impressive product and the brand is being foisted on the scene to capture lower end market from others. As good as Chevron was 2 years ago. If in Canada you are getting a great value from a certain base oil maker there branded under this name.....

thanks , G-MAN , my route to SHELL data sheet wouldn't work . Why ?

As for the other post , got me leaning towards a trial of the SHELL in a 5w30 in the future . THANKS

I went by Target this afternoon and got 5 quarts of Formula Shell for my upcoming Auto-
RX rinse phase. They don't carry 5w20, so it looks like I'm going to have to go to 5w30 if I'm going to stick with this oil. Price was nice at $1.79 per qt.

I have been using Shell 5W20 for over 4 years without any problems, also had a used oil analysis done on one of my vehicles last Sept
and came back with the best wear I have ever seen for 3300 miles. Aluminum-1 Iron-1 Copper-1. So you can't complain on this oil. You mentioned the smell well GF-3 was ok but the
GF4 does stink.
