Far better than any Saturn S-Series engine I am used to seeing. That may be a combination of your careful choice of oil, and because many other people who drive those cars treat them poorly.
Because there is air circulation on the right side of this picture due to the PCV system. The right half should be slightly cooler and have less carbonaceous gases under the valve cover.
Looks excellent! No need to worry about a single thing. Little oil burning, and use a quality oil to top off. Used a decent filter and button it up. Good to go. Put another 94k on it and enjoy.
I wish my son's 2000 was that clean. I was expecting some varnish but not the other accumulated crud that I found. I'd put the cover back on and forget it, which I'm hoping to do next time I take it off.
so do all mineral oils cause varnish like that? i guess it doesn't really hurt anything because no one will be looking under your valve cover, but still..why is it that synthetics don't cause varnish?

you should try 15w40 during the summer or a mix with 15w40, it may help in your case

No not all mineral oils cause varnish, and there can be varnish from synthetic oils, too. That's the short answer, at least.
