No offense to you, but I am still trying to figure out why pharmacists make as much $$$ as they do. Care to shed some light?

A) They don't make as much as people assume.
B) People's lives can depend on them NOT making a mistake....
C) Any stuff that is recommended to NOT be flushed down the toilet or thrown into the trash when not used to prevent harm to the environment, yet the same stuff is prescribed for internal use, let's hope the people pulling the stuff of the shelves and counting pills, or at least checking the techs doing the work are actually decently compensated.

A) Tons and tons of schooling (very difficult schooling)
B) ZERO margin for error when filling prescriptions
C) Pharmacist constantly catch doctors mistakes
D) They are worth every penny of their salary

I herd cats, bend time and space to meet the whims of management, long story short, I make my boss look really good.

I'm a "data person" to a bunch of medical people who know just enough about computers to be dangerous. They know that the computer can give them data at the push of a button and I've spent the last 4 years trying to teach them that while that may be the case, I need time (in some cases weeks) to prep the data and do the programming so they can push that magic button.

As for pharmacists, worth every penny and then some. And I'm not saying that because I have a family member in the field.....

Currently I am a MCE student in Cleveland. But I am working as an intern/coop at Alcoa on the 50,000 ton press rebuild project, which is about a month and a half away from completion. Once complete, it will be forging out aluminum and titanium parts for the Joint Strike Fighter jet, the A380 and Boeing 787’s among many others. Incredible piece of equipment. Currently our 35,000 ton press is doing all the work load, but the 50K will be complete in a few short weeks. An awesome project to be a part of. Largest forging press in the country!

Not only the reasons above for pharmacists, but they have to be folks who can be trusted with "schedule" meds. (If I remember my terms heard by my pharmacy tech ex-wife.)

Not everyone can be trusted with the pills, so not everyone qualifies to make the dough. Let alone all the checks, the responsibility if something goes wrong, etc.

Sounds impressive, is all the force needed to actually heat the metal as its forged to prevent cracks? You wouldn't expect a huge press to be used to make planes as light as possible, more like stamping out 400 ton dump truck frames or something like that.

Thanks for backing me up!

Hit the nail on the head. It can be mentally challenging some days.

Congrats to her!! Have her keep her options open and apply at other places. Target seems to be huge in MN(if she's in MN), maybe they could have more openings. Places like CVS and Walgreens are also very big and always looking for help. Good luck to her!!

No clue dude. :-)

LOL so let;s shed some light...

Pharmacists (esp. clinical, but also retail) make as much as they do, because they save doctor's behinds every day, and prevent them from making horrible mistakes that can kill people.

My wife and I are both pharmacists, and i can confirm what I said above happens nearly everyday.
My good friend, a retail pharmacist, says the same thing..

I'm an administrative assistant at a govt. crown corporation.

I mainly do data entry of all kinds.

I have a 2-year 'college' (trade school) degree as a legal assistant, and a 4-year honours degree from Carleton University in legal studies.

I probably should have a better position, but it's 'comfortable' here, and I'm not as ambitious as I should be....

Thanks!

She's in a small town in NW Iowa.

She has "shadowed" in their Pharmacy Dept. often.

She's 24 & single, so I keep on her to keep her options open.

Another thing to consider, is it varies GREATLY depending on location.

They actually pre-heat both the dies and aluminum pieces prior to forging. The dies are constantly heated under and above the press while in operation as well. The press does hot forging, which is preferred for larger castings to prevent cracks and other issues.

The forgings that come out of these presses are HUGE. I saw a few of the A380 wing spurs roll off the press and they are nearly as long as a bus. They are huge, heavy forgings. They get inspected, checked and some light work by hand here. They are sent away where I would assume over 50% of the weight is removed with finish machining where they drastically change appearance.

They also do components for landing gear, which are quite large themselves. Not sure on the required force needed, but I believe it saves more time than anything. The 35K press has to do a few cycles to finish the part, where the 50K I would assume to do in less time.

Maybe it's changed, that's not how I recall it when I went to college. They did two years of college and then two years of pharm school, and that was it. The final degree was a BA or [censored], don't recall which. It was about the same "toughness" level as an optometrist or a chiropracter. This was late 70's, early 80's.

The Chemistry wasn't much - about what the ag / nursing students took. And lots of jobs have zero margin for error, that's not unusual.

It's a good trade though, that's for sure. I know two pharmacists that have parlayed drug stores into quite a bit of real estate and are definitely four or five percenters.
