It is very rare when I will read all 7 pages of a thread. But this one kept my interest.
To the OP: There is one common element running through this discussion. You must have a passion and a love for your work.
Me - I'm self employed, a single proprietor for 30 years. A hobby became a vocation and then a full time job.
If you don't enjoy your work (and many workers hate theirs) you will not do well. Determine what you like, know yourself, and then pursue your dream. No one can do it for you.

I have a degree in Criminal Science w/ a minor in psych. I'm a Corrections Officer and have been for over 6 years. It is a government job that I assure you has not "overpayed" me. I make a good living, but what I make is not what it should be with the risks that come with dealing with 1,600 convicted murderers, sex offenders, etc. I've been punched, kicked, cut with a knife, pepper sprayed, spit on. Someone who tells me that i'm overpayed has no freakin clue. I pay into a pension plan, and I also pay into an IRA that I started myself. I started at 21 years old, and i'll get to retire at 51. I guarantee you that I will have earned it, lol Who know I might do something part time afterwards, I would like to become a gun smith.
Other than that, my hobbies are BITOG, firearms, movies, lifting weights, ghost hunting.

I have a few cousins in Pharm school. Some pharmacists are compensated pretty well.
I now work for a bank, and so does my wife. She is an attorney and can't stand the field, so she is now in banking.
I'm always thinking of new career paths. My degree is in Economics. If I go back for anything, it would be my CFA.
I'd love to have a more physical type job, and live somewhere out west. South Jersey isn't bad though. It's actually a great location....I love the open space out west though.
I also love being 45 minutes from the beach.

Hay farmer. I pretty much take winters off but from middle of May through Sept I work 14- 16 hrs a day 7 days a week. After Sept all the equiptment goes in my shop for maintenace which takes me through Oct-Nov.
i do NOTHING.

Coast Guard aviation mechanic/aircrew. Love it. I've got 7 years now and probably going to retire from this job.
Wife teaches 3rd grade at a public school. Used to love it, not anymore. She is being forced to babysit and not teach. This looks like her last year.

Not yet. I have a buddy that can give me a good referal at one of the plants but i'm not sure how much money i'll be making since I have no experience. I bet it's around 10-12 bucks an hour. I'm in between going back to school and hopefully making 20 bucks an hour as a welder or just getting whatever job and working my way up.
I know GE starts at $20/hr if you have electronics background repairing medical equipment. They even have paid internships that lead into full-time postion. Its an easy job, lots of OT if you want to work it and you don't get dirty... not to mention tons of benefits.

Before I retired I worked in IT for 37 years. Started off working on IBM 1440 computers in 1967 and was working on UNIX systems when I retired in 2004. Very good career with great pay and benefits..
