Hi all, new to BITOG and starting to pick up how to maintain my car by reading all the threads here. :)

Do I recycle the old Transmission Fluid at my local Schucks? I'm guessing that's the proper way to dispose of it...

I had done research and they say transmission and brake fluid are oil-based and should be recycled like motor oil.

Brake fluid is not oil based I just put it in with the waste oil. Some recyclers use a sniffer to chech the oil for cfc type solvents.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Steve, what is considered "waste oil"?

A recycler told me they don't want volatiles (paint thinner, gasoline, etc.) because it is dangerous to the processing they do to the oil. Another told me they don't care (brake fluid, mineral spirits, etc. are okay) as long as it is organic. I suppose it depends on the particular recycler and what they do with fluid after collecting.

For all recyclers, handyman said it best - treat it like motor oil.
