We have this smaller New Holland tractor and a Massey Ferguson that are about the same size. I was crossing the OEM filter numbers and found they both use the same inner air filter, Fleetguard AF25491 but use different outer elements, an AF25964 for the Massey and an AF25492 for the New Holland. Both outer elements have exactly the same measurements and CFM rating. I spoke with a Fleetguard rep. and he couldn't tell any difference with the info he had. Of course he recommended only using what the OEM crossed to. Any reason not to stock just one filter for both applications?

There is a price difference between the two, the AF25492 costs like $50 and the AF25964 is like $30. The outer filter catches most of the dirt/dust. You can blow the outer one out when it gets plugged up too much but they don't recommend blowing out the inner filter, just replacing it when it get contaminated.

I looked through the Fleetguard product catalog and it lists the AF25491 as the safety element used with AF25492, AF25964 Magnum RS version. It lists the AF25492 as the primary filter used with AF25491 Magnum RS version. The AF25964 is listed as primary filter used with AF25491. Trying to put all that together makes me think that the AF25491 and the AF25964 are Magnum RS version filters and the AF25492 is not.

It would make me feel better to go with the crossed part #'s. I would hate to find out they are different the hard way.

And yeah the inner filter is sometimes also called a safety filter and according to all the service literature I have seen, should not be cleaned.

I think it is because normal servicing of the outer filter has the possibility of breaking down the media over time. So, the inner filter can still catch any particles that get through the outer filter which may be passing more particles then when it was new.

I have found with farm equipment that if you find your inner filter getting excessively dirty, can mean it is time to get a new set of filters because the outer one is worn out.
