What causes alignment to go out of spec?

When you consider how many of these components are joined together at rubber joints, it's amazing how the whole system can even stay in alignment in the first place.

I've seen lower control arms with dings that look like someone tapped it with a hammer/chisel,
perhaps to adjust alignment by bending the arm slightly.
