With the reduction of zddp in motor oils, what brand of 10w30 should I use in my never rebuilt 400 cu. in 2bbl Pontiac engine? I have 125,000 miles and have never had a single issue with my engine since I bought it brand new 46 years ago. It does leak oil in a couple of locations (like the rear main) but does not burn oil. Would a high mileage oil be best. Should I add some ZDDP from Eastwood when I change oil?

Champion Oil in Clinton Mo. offers ZDDP additive as does Edelbrock , look in the local mom&pop type parts store.
Use what ever is your favorite oil.

Rotella 10w30 should be near optimum IMO, I believe QS Defy might also do okay but the ZDDP levels are a bit lower than Rotella in the 10w30 version.

First welcome to BITOG.

The only reason not to use a modern 5W-30 oil is the reduction in ZDDP so I'd suggest QS Defy 5W-30.
The problem with using a HDEO 10W-30 is that it's almost 40wt oil which you really don't need.

Castrol make some classic car oils, but you would need to look up what was the original oil spec and then contact them for a recommendation. In general terms you should use an oil that includes a high Zinc content rather than use additives.

Amsoil Z-Rod 10W30 Synthetic Oil. It's especially engineered for classic cars, has 1440PPM of ZDDP and has the additional benefit of having a proprietary blend of rust and corrosion inhibitors to protect during storage.

We also use the Amsoil Series 3000 HDD synthetic 5w30 oil in many of our 60's classic cars. It has a nicely high 1380 PPM ZDDP and a 3.5 HTHS.

Check out the Amsoil site for additional info. Excellent oils !

I also prefer HDD 5W-30 to Z-Rod 10W-30 since it's a bit lighter but it's 3.5cP HTHSV still means it's a heavier than spec' oil.
That's why I like the semi-syn QS Defy 5W-30. It's virgin viscosity is more in line with what was originally spec'd for the car.

The Defy option is a pretty good one but I am such a fan of T5 that it would be my choice. I am using that oil nowadays in the lion's share of my applications... I put that ____ in everything!

John.
