My clean one owner 2002 Chevy 2500HD 4x4 with 148K miles

I’m not a mechanic….have a buddy that is..did this yesterday

New Gates water pump T/stat…both belts and tensioners

New heater hoses and SS connections

New fan clutch and fan

Fresh Dex Cool coolant

New plugs and wires

New fuel and air filter

Rotated tires…LT285-75x16s E rated

Runs great….youngest daughter gets it when I’m dead…

Your youngest daughter is going to be lucky girl (and the envy of the boys for having that truck). I myself have a 93 Silverado and the only way anyone is getting my old girl is when they pry my cold dead fingers off of the steering wheel!
 
2018 Silverado 1500:
The owner had complained of an occasional engine fan on full-bore. This made me think about ECT sensor or thermostat.

There were no codes for the cooling system at all but it would never get above 180, so I made the call on a thermostat. RA carried OEM GM.

New on right, appears to be updated design:

Has the 6.0L…has right at 3300 hours

Chipped it years ago

Revs out at 111…. they say

Biggest maintenance has been replacing front wheel bearing assemblies at 142K

Two things that have been bugging me for a while.

First, the LS430 fog lamp took a hit. Unknown how this occurred; I have my suspicions but it's too late for accusations (no, it wasn't my wife; she would have been up front about it). The dealership noticed this when doing their walk-around back in January. I'm hoping that the adjustment and whatever attaches the lamp to the body isn't fubar. In true Toyota fashion, I can't find a parts diagram....yet.

More concerning are the hi-beam bulbs aren't illuminating; both the highs and the DRL's (the 5005 bulbs serve both functions). any suggestions here are welcome.

High beam initial inspection:
  • Both fog lamps work.
  • Both high beams and DRL's don't work.
  • High beam indicator on instrument cluster illuminates.
  • The fogs turn off when I switch the high beams on.
The FSM states to do a function check with the hand-held tester (Vetronics). I got thru two menus of the menu tree and there is no function check for the lights. The SW is supposed to be current thru MY 2007.

I did a few visual checks. I do have the FSM wiring diagrams. It appears to be isolated to the high beam circuit; I find it hard to believe that both bulbs would go out at the same time. They were replaced back in October 2024.
Took the +30 minutes to remove all the cosmetic covers, a relay box and the air filter box for access to the back of the headlamp assemblies.

Twelve volts are present at both lamp connectors. Removed the 9005 bulbs and they're fubar.

Brake pads and rotors all around on the Subie. Pads in the rear were at 50% and the fronts were at 75%, but I was getting a bunch of noise. Front pads were not free moving in the hardware. The parking brake was also poorly adjusted, it's never felt better after adjusting it.

Against better judgement I did go with Raybestos Element 3 pads and rotors. They were on sale (I guess due to the First Brands thing) so I'll try them. Front pads were great, no issues. The rear pads the paint on the ears was too thick (caliper brackets were clean) so I had to slightly take a file to them, I know a big no-no.

I also seemed to have lost my light when I finished up the front drivers side. Oh, wait, no I didn't! :ROFLMAO:

Also couldn't get my jack under the front sub frame to jack it up, so I had to do corner by corner. I was a little sketched out, and amazed how rigid the car is!

PP 0W20 and Hengst oil filter for the QX60, and while up on jackstands, I checked the ball joints and tie rod ends for play. Still solid at 146k km. Weather is sunny today and we are getting mild enough to melt some of the snow that has dominated our property since November 2025. Nice to see some greenish areas out front. Cleaned up some dog doo in North facing backyard, which is an mostly icefield so too dangerous for dogs and humans.
 
Driveway graded, engine and power steering pulled… hit 100hrs on the tractor. Only had it since July, best thing you can have if you have any beyond a city lot. Like to add another tractor for small tasks but the old Dakota has its limits. Now to throw it on the trailer along with the barb wire and take to scrap.

Installed an inexpensive 440 lb electric joist on the ceiling of the garage. It’s probably a 10 foot ceiling, drywall, with truss above it. I ran a 6’ 2x10, used 4 inch heavy deck screws about every 1-1/2 inches where the truss passes above the 2x10, and bolted the hoist to the 2x10. Then wire-tied the power and control lines. The main intent is for managing the rooftop tent, especially if gas goes nuts, but I’ve wanted this for other work as well. Very pleased. Hoist was $95 on Amazon, lumber was maybe $12 and I think fasteners ran me $15.

Wild thought. Mount one in the attic above the hatch and use it to hoist the seasonal up and down?

-installed the Xprite LED fogs. These have gained popularity among JK and KL owners because they're "pretty good" for about $40. Again, I'm sure they're not UH-MAZE-ING but in terms of value you get more light for minimal investment. Longevity? NO IDEA -- but whaddya want from $40 Chinese LEDs??

Spent some of this glorious Midwest afternoon tinkering with my Copart Volvo, getting it ever closer to being back on the road. First up: front strut assemblies, as the left front took a little whack in whatever accident it was involved in.

Nothing fancy, but for a flip they'll do just fine. $100 for the pair from eBay.

I got the bent rear lateral arm unbolted and out of the way for when the new one arrives on Thursday, I wouldn't have had to touch the rear at all but unfortunately Copart's forklift driver didn't quite clear the rear suspension with his forks and turned the lateral arm into a boomerang 🙄.

Finished up the day by draining whatever was in the sump and installing a fresh Napa Proselect 57021 along with 6 quarts of Castrol Edge 5w30 leftover from the last rebate cycle.
 
Shed cleaned up.. now its a organized disaster. Going to pour concrete piers for the container down at the place, then I can start moving stuff down. Got old red out, thought it was dieing on me when I parked it or maybe cold blooded. Did 10 miles and seems ok, stumbles off idle 1/2 the time but clears up quick. Need to try to revive the 6v battery.

4 loads of rock hauled and tailgated on county roads(fairly long distance runs) and one tire repair. It was flat this morning and I aired it up but for whatever reason I couldn’t find any leaks. After the first load it had dropped in pressure and I found a hole. Tire guy is a good friend of mine and ended up finding 3 total punctures and a piece of a screw that was stuck in a tread block. These are getting replaced soon so I decided to have it patched and get a little more life out of them. We had a massive amount of rainfall on Friday night which severely washed out some of the county roads. I’m assuming that the graders are pulling junk out of the ditches as they recover material and that’s where the nail, screws, and bolt came from that was in the tire. It’s just a headache you deal with running a truck in this environment.

Just got our ‘12 Chrysler van back from the dirty d-word where they throughly wrung us out for a water pump / tstat / heater hose job. I do a fair share of my own work but in this case just wasn’t interested. To make up for it I will be doing an ATF pan drop and filter change this weekend. At 175k it’s certainly due. Last I have on record was when we bought it at 60k 😳

Hopefully there was another one in there along the way that I forgot to document and I’m not jumping from the pan into the fire. There’s already some shift-flare and other stumbles during both accel / decel …. 😭
 
Working on sparkplug #8 on a Chevy LS engine. It’s the one next to the passenger firewall. It’s easy to get to if you have a pet Orangutang. This my 2nd time I’ve done these plugs and I prefer to take off the passenger front wheel to get to #8.

Getting the boot off is done by resting pliers against the heat shield a using it as a fulcrum to twist the boot off the plug.

Here is a photo looking up from under the truck. There it is, like saying Titan is right near Saturn. I placed the socket and crossover on the plug from down under.

I have at socket and crossover on and I use a 1/2 inch ratchet crossed over to the 3/8 inch drive socket to be able to give it the mighty turn. After 100,000 miles it’s pretty tight.

I got it loose and then the socket slipped off. Enough for tonight. 🤬

2003 Matrix:

Final repair phase to be ready for cross-country trip.

- Front struts
- Front rotors and pads
- Sway bar end links
- Belt tensioner
- ATF drain/fill with the final two quarts of the 12 quarts I had purchased

229,420 miles. Happy to say that it's running smoothly, no rattles or vibrations and doesn't sound like it's going to fall apart when you go over bumps 😁
