What are you working on today?

Not much at work today. They ran out of work about 2pm. But when there was work I done front brakes and machine rotors on a RAV4 and then a 40K on a different RAV4 too. 40K is oil change, tire rotation, front differential drain and full and both air filters. Other than that it was it and I helped out some of the flat rate guys with their work too. My coworker brought me in boxes and boxes of DVDs and man was I excited lol. I spent the remainder of the day looking at all my new DVDs.

About 10am dad texted me saying that cylinder 3 spark plug in my truck blew out again. I suspect it’s because he dogs the heck out of that truck. I don’t like it but I refrain from saying anything because it would be really mean if I did lol. I’m tired of him driving it but don’t have another working vehicle for him right now. I guess I’m going to have to figure out the thread size (head is 13/16) then get a timesert and install it. It done it once last week too and I got the plug to tighten down and I thought it was good. I have never done plugs in it before but I thought maybe it had worked its way loose. Luckily I bought a set of plugs for it back in 2018 when I bought the truck but it didn’t need them then. Guess they will be in handy now. Also whoever done the plugs last time (I suspect Jiffy Lube because previous owners loved going there for their work) loaded it with so much anti seize that I had to clean the plug off and the cylinder hole and try to avoid getting anything down in the engine. Yes I’m all for using anti seize on plugs but a little bit goes a long way. Yes be smart and use it on there like you should but don’t use so much where it’s so thick and you can’t even see the threads on the plug. After I got most of the anti seize out of the hole I ran my finger around it and didn’t feel any threads so I suspect they are shot. I’m a bit angry that he chose to drive it 30 miles to work and 30 miles back on 3 cylinders but like I said I just have to keep my cool even though it’s hard lol. Both times it’s blown the plug out it’s done a huge back fire too. So hopefully all it needs is the timesert and 4 new spark plugs. I asked him why didn’t he call a tow truck or wait for me to get off work at 5 to come look at it. He is like well I’m for sure not paying for a tow truck and I am not going to wait on you either because I had to get a Red Bull. I love him but man we sure do see things differently lol. I was like well I’d rather pay for a tow truck than risk you blowing the inside of the cat or something like that to which he replied that any issue pertaining to that is one of those things that people hear and repeat and isn’t true. I’m like well respectfully working in the industry I know your wrong but I’m going to leave it at that.

Working to straighten bumper bracket on an '06 Ram 1500. One thing I like about my 50T press is that it rarely takes no for an answer

I also used the incredibly high tech methods of leverage, pulling, and the blue wrench to attempt to straighten the frame mount (true body shops would be appalled by my methods and the end results)

Oh, and I need a bigger torch. But that'll be some fun shopping soon :D

Ran all the gas out of the estate sale generator, changed the spark plug and oil, fresh 93 octane with fuel stabilizer added. This is a powermate 7000 watt unit with a Honda GX390 engine, just like the one I already have. It's been a reliable unit, so when I saw this one at the sale I bid on it. It'll be nice to have two.

The wife and I use several of these stools around the house and shop but eventually the hex nut for the adjustable feet falls out of the legs.

I fired up the lathe and tapped some 3/4" solid stock M8x1.25. Then I drill a hole in the side of the leg and plug weld my threaded insert.

Surprised maybe not threads are metric

After doing the rear shocks on the Benz two days ago, today I replaced the fronts. Both were heavily worn; passenger side wouldn't rebound at all and offered no resistance to being compressed while the driver side was easy to compress and rebounded about an inch shorter than the new Bilsteins that went in.

Along with the new shocks on the front, I replaced the boot, foam bump stop, bearing and mount. I reused the springs. It rides like new and should settle in nicely.

Overslept this morning but still managed to get 6 loads of rock hauled for the county before my "real" job. On my way into town my Tercel decided it had enough and quit. Had my parents bring a farm truck and a tow strap and drug it home. Swapped all my PPE, firefighting gear, etc. into my Ranger until the Tercel is fixed. It had a couple really long cranks yesterday which never happens and it cut out/hesitated a few times on the way home so I'm guessing the fuel pump bit the dust. My gut says it's a fuel pressure issue. First time in 10 years that this car left me stranded somewhere.

Ordered a new Denso pump kit and Wix fuel filter from rockauto to try out. Fortunately there is an access panel under the back seat so it looks like it will be really easy to swap out. I'll try a pressure regulator next if the pump doesn't help. After that it'll have to go to a shop or I'll have to rig up a pressure gauge to do more troubleshooting. I hate loading the parts cannon but it was virtually the same price to buy a pump or the fittings and gauge to diagnose.

Working as a head custodian at a public school. Auto scrubber that cleans the terrazzo halls not pumping cleaning fluid. Blew out all the lines no go. A outside company can fix it but now I need authorization then they pickup up fix then drop off. Looking like a 30 day turnaround if lucky. Pulled up on you tube how to change the pump ordered it did a pump removal installation. Took about two hours total turnaround 5 days. Need to order two new batteries next I'm thinking no clue how old they are

I wanted to mow the front lawns but I forgot to shut the sprinklers off yesterday. Long, wet grass is no fun. I'll give it a few days to dry out (I didn't want to mow today anyway).

Cleaned off the work benches in the garage. Storage space is becoming an issue.

Did a survey on the kitchen sink project. I don't want to be going back and forth to the hardware store.
  • Get rid of that awful Delta faucet and throw it off a cliff.
  • Remove and redo the calk around the basins.
I tried the shut off valves. The cold side was fine. The hot side would not shut off; small but steady stream. I suspect it's mineral build up. Or cheap contractor parts.
  • Replace both valves with new, 1/4 turn valves.
  • I suspect compression attachment as the house has copper piping. But I've seen odd stuff with plumbing before.
  • Confirmed.

Now I need to find the time.

What all are you responsible for as head custodian? My first real job was in facilities and grounds for a school district. We were responsible for all custodial operations, grounds and equipment, technology/IT, and all facilities and building maintenance. It was myself and 1 other person not including the custodial staff. You could literally go from snaking out a toilet to troubleshooting a network issue.

1992 Mercedes 300D 2.5 turbo

LF window regulator replacement, sound deadening with 2mm butyl + 4mm acoustic foam

Out: OE regular with Bosch motor (NLA)
In: Magenti Marelli from SPARETO in Estonia, $155 euros delivered by DHL in 4 days

The original Bosch motor was starting to struggle.

The regulator slides were lubricated with SuperLube Silicone Grease, the half moon gear drive with Rotella EP and the felt glass slides in the window frame with dielectric grease. Regulator mounting bolts secured with blue tread locker and schnorr washers.

The Magnetti Marelli uses wheels instead of plastic slides. And it attaches with 4 bolts instead of 3.

It works perfectly. I’m really pleased.

Today was our busiest day in two weeks. Few oil changes and rotates, two flat tires who wanted repair but couldn’t be fixed because too close to the side to do it. Then a rusty Chrysler for brake pads and machine rotors all around, and wipers. Pain in the rear end on that. Their rotors don’t have bolt holes so I beat and beat on the rotors for a while and finally got them off. They should not have been machined because they had a lot of rust but lube techs didn’t ask and sold machining so boss wanted me to go ahead and do it because the customer was there since 8am and this was at 3pm because they didn’t have anyone available to work on it. Don’t know why Chrysler coming to a Toyota shop but it is what it is. I got to use 13mm and 18mm for the first time in forever lol. Applied a nice coating of silver anti seize to the hub surfaces. Everyone in the shop gives me flack for using anti seize but I don’t care I do what I do and they do what they do. I use anti seize on just about everything. I keep copper, silver and nickel on hand at all times. Shop will only pay for silver because it’s the only thing available in our area so I buy the other stuff with my money and if someone asks to use some I give them the silver stuff lol. But parts guy did get me a very big thing of brake grease so I’m excited for that lol. Enough to last for awhile.

2006 Ram 1500 came in like this

I am not a body guy but I got it cobbled back together. It is definitely good from afar but far from good. The owner was insistent on keeping the aftermarket honeycomb grille and cheesy aftermarket headlights.

2-post = frame machine, right? I loosened the radiator mount before this pull and just loosening it caused a rad side tank to start leaking.

My brother brought his bullnose IDI Ford over because it was shifting like junk. Has a C6, BTW. On the test drive, if you accelerated normally, it would hold 1st way too long then sort of stutter shift through 2nd, and skip right into 3rd. If you babied it, it would flare into both second and third.

My first thought was bad modulator valve but it looked fairly new, had no oil in the vacuum line and held a vacuum when I put a hand pump on it. I traced the vacuum line up to the engine bay looking for problems with the hose and noticed while poking around that the vacuum control valve was loose and missing one of its hold down screws. The VCV bolts to the side of the injector pump and sort of acts like a TV cable. I suspect that I had knocked it out of adjustment while working in it a few weeks ago. We found a second hold down screw, adjusted the valve about mid way and took it for a drive. It shifted like new! Relief. Come backs suck even more when the work was done for free, LOL.

I'm actually all new to this. I sold my business just before covid and retired. Got bored quick took a job in my school district PT delivering mail. Took the Nassau county custodian test scored a 100 became a custodian at the highschool. Head custodian got sick I became temp head custodian guy never came back. They gave me the job permeant after I took the Nassau county head custodian test. I lucked out to be honest not the normal path. I really don't do much just make sure my crew does. Lots of paperwork and keeping my guys on schedule. I have 4 guys 1 girl during the day 7 guys at night. Most big maintenance jobs we have a large maintenance crew within our district. We have separate IT dept

Fairly slow today at work. I’ve been working with some of the competent lube techs who want to learn and have been showing them stuff at their will and their request. I enjoy teaching people especially those who want to learn. Today we had “class” on how to machine brake rotors and install brake pads and are doing it tomorrow too after work when we have to work on a salesman’s car. I told them it looks very good to management with them taking initiative to come do work instead of stand around. They agree with me that it’s stupid that Toyota doesn’t give you new hardware or shims with brake pads as expensive as their brake pads are for a customer. I told them always use anti seize on the hub face and on the faceof the rotor that touches the wheel as Toyota is notorious for stuck and corroded wheels. I also told them places to use copper anti seize vs silver or nickel. I’m one who believes anti seize should be on most things where it’s appropriate and there are too many people that don’t use it.

Also didn’t get my truck fixed last night. We tried fixing the threads with just the thread chaser at dad’s suggestion and that didn’t work so he just said not to worry about it till this weekend when we can see to do it. He took moms car after he dropped her off and she took Uber home then had to drive another 30 miles to dads work and get her car so she can go to work in the morning and then 30 miles back. Time to relax now and get rested for work tomorrow. I’m standing here looking at all my DVDs and Blu-Ray trying to decide what to watch before bed since baseball is off till tomorrow for the World Series.
