What are you working on today?

Under the hood; stuff like this annoys the heck out of me.

The air intake was held on these. I'd install the correct fasteners/clips but these fasteners from the Lexus parts book are totally wrong. I think I'll go with rivet nuts.

There was a K&N filter in the box. The filter appears to have been doing a good job; the clean side of the air box was dust free. Replaced with a Denso filter.

Wasn't liking the K&N?

17 explorer 3.5 water pump, full timing set (minus phasers), belt, tensioner, coolant, spark plugs and engine mount. Timing chain was very stretched out on this one, lots of slack between bank 1 and bank 2 cams, reason for going in there was a coolant leak and some chain noise. 138K miles. Plus some wiring repairs thanks to mice. Nice little side job.

Cleaning off the engine in places that aren't going to be seen when it's all buttoned up....Nice! (y)

Have to be clean in order to not contaminate the internals. Everything is cleaned with a plastic razor blade, motorcraft silicone remover and motorcraft metal prep wipes (phosphoric acid wipes). Brake clean also as needed.

Finished it up today including wiring repairs. Letting the silicone cure.

2019 Ram 1500 Classic 1500 w/ 5.7L, came in for a misfire on cylinder 2. At just under 130K I was suspecting ignition coil and was right. After replacing plugs, suspect coil was moved to cyl #4 and misfire code followed it.

Job was straightforward, this engine is packaged pretty nicely. Like most modern V8s, there's 2 or 3 plug locations that are a bear to get to, the only problem with these is there's twice as many of them in the bad spots. The 2 cylinders (4 plugs) on rear passenger side tucked under the brake booster, and rearmost drivers side took the most effort and careful stacking of socket extensions to get into the tight spaces.

Used Bosch fine-wire double iridium at about $6/plug & a $40 Autozone/Duralast coil. Job took about 3-1/2 hours mostly due to the sheer number of them. Runs like a top afterward.

What engine is that that uses 14 spark plugs?
LOL, amateur mistake. Should have been 16, I sat the #2 cylinder plugs in another location (since that was the misfire cylinder) to inspect them closely, forgot to add them back for the photo. They looked as good as the others.

Hemi 5.7L, dual spark plug/cyl design. I've heard of a few other engines that use that trick to comply with emissions, but can't remember them off the top of my head.

Well shoot. I thought I was going to learn something new since what I know about mechanics fits in a thimble and there's a barrel full of mechanic knowledge out there. :)

Trying my hand at bubble balancing. Getting it zero’d in initially was the hard part. The steel rim took 1/2 ounce in those locations.. the alloys took 3/4 ounce in the same place. Same tires so maybe thats normal? Got them pretty close. Before one had 9 1/4 ounce on the one side the other only 1/2 ounce clip on. Both looked similar bubble wise aka off.

I placed the weights in the center of the rim. Can’t test drive till tomorrow.. not holding my breath for perfection but maybe a little better than before.

I've been satisfied with the results I've gotten from static balancing. I bet it will turn out great.

Awesome work @Bushman5!!

Nothing fancy today. Replaced rhe Bauer cam latches on the rear doors of our Trailswest 6 horse. My wife was delivering a horse that smashed its fat @zz on the left door, breaking the latch right off. Easy swap and now it's ready for the next haul this weekend.
