What are you working on today?

2011 Forester rear hitch and trailer wiring install. I elected for Curt because I've been impressed with everything they make.

I thought I was clever trying to stab it in on my tranny jack but I couldn't-- or was unwilling to risk-- dropping the exhaust any lower, which would have been required. The wife and I were able to manhandle it in when I abandoned this approach:View attachment 181301

Curt plug 'n play harness in place:

I chose to drop the wiring down thru a drain plug under the spare:View attachment 181303

The guy thinks he's gonna pull a tiny U-haul across the country. On my test drive this NA 2.5 tied to the automatic is weak. It's also one of those wonderful Subie engines that uses a quart every thousand, so maybe compression isn't where it should be. Sounds like the definition of misery to me, but whatever.

No worse then 800 miles from Wisconsin to Virginia with this setup, although it's a 5 speed if that matters. I68 through the WV and w MD mountains was the hardest part.

As a machinist I always say I'd rather drill through my big toe with a dull chucking reamer....but I'm the only one who gets the joke ;)

And yeah his plan is WI to CO....which I guess ain't technically coast to coast but close enough to be 100% miserable :) Plus we live at ~7k but you gotta go over a couple passes at 10k to get here!

My dad was a machinist with the railroad and Army when he was young. It’s why I mess around like I do and his garage is a fun place. So that is completely within our “language.” ;)

Here’s a joke posting I made about his machinist history recently:

I really appreciate that 😒

I can only try 😳

Passenger side inner rack boot isn't looking good
That'll require further investigation
Alignment is way out, it's all over the road
Moderate brake pulsation @ 30mph, rather bad any faster
Rear sway bar links are clunking, but I ran out of time
Next weekend I'll get those done, and investigate the front end

I bet everyone's favorite franchise repair/replace glass company will come screw it up somehow 😲
Oh goodie I can't wait for that impending debacle 🙄

Decided to play Good Samaritan and perform a basic 120K service (minus brake fluid) on my neighbor’s Asian Jeep…err 2014 Forester 2.5. Dealer wanted $1657 for the service.

Spark Plugs, lof, rotate, air filter, cabin filter, front diff fluid, rear diff fluid, f/r wiper blades. The plugs are fun:

Of course I inspected the car and inadvertently signed myself up to replace the rear brakes, front brakes, perform a brake fluid exchange, L/R wheel bearing, rear struts and maybe reseal the lower oil pan and cam carriers (eventually).

Someday I’ll learn to shut up. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Today was really slow for a Monday. Watched a lube tech argue with the boss and get fired. He left the drain plug loose in a 2023 Tundra Friday and nearly blew the engine up. All they asked of him was to clean off the skid plate and make sure everything was tight and the oil level was full as another tech made sure there was no internal damage. He refused and said it wasn’t in his bay so he couldn’t work on it and that he shouldn’t have to clean up his mess if someone else is working on it. Gives the dispatcher an attitude and the dispatcher passes it on to the boss who asked the dispatcher to tell him to clean it. So the boss comes over to talk reasonably but lube tech starts yelling and pointing and says he isn’t responsible for the leak and he doesn’t take commands anymore as he is a private citizen now and isn’t in the military now. And just goes on and on to where the whole shop is watching this go down. Then makes remarks about how hourly employees are treated like slaves. Boss asks to take it to the office out of respect for others around tech refuses but eventually goes after other managers come over. Big boss gave authorization to fire him which happened. Unfortunately this kid made $3 more than I do per hour strictly because he was military. I’m honestly thinking of asking for a raise but worried they would tell me they aren’t in a spot to give one like they have been saying for months. I’m glad he is gone though he was very lazy I mean very lazy.

Had a day off and it was raining so i made myself busy. Did some skid steer maintenance. I placed both counter weights on the rear right side as i finally had enough of the design flaw. You cannot hang a counterweight on the rear left and keep the battery cover on, it just doesnt work.

Removed some of the access panels underneath, popped the cab and began to washout the chassis. She was nasty, 760 hours so it was about time. Shes not perfect but i hit it from all angles and got the majority.

Then used the cheapo plugnin leaf blower, dried it a bit and then hit the cooling stack. Works like a charm.

Then peoperly installed the sound deadening mat that was supposed to be atrached to the cab, right under the seat. An old can of 3M adhesive spray worked like magic.

Come by the house when you get done, I need spark plugs in the Outback... 😁

Well that's 안좋다 😲

Two Delphi outer tie rod ends will get this tired 2011 Sonata through even the loosest pre trip inspections 🙄
I must refresh the driver on NOT WORN/NO EXCESSIVE FREE PLAY 🗣️

Original outer TREs on a 2011 Sonata, 135k
I did lower ball joints in June, and sway bar links in April
Seems to be a ~100k front end on these cars
The Valeo/Mando alternator seems to be holding up well, so that's something 🤷‍♂️

Mike, what suggestions did you have for this grid repair? Same issue on my boss’s Yukon and I’ve offered to help, but have never attempted this before.

I started tearing the head off my nephew's 4cyl Isuzu. He overheated it badly due to a leaking heater hose and ran it until it died. All 4 cylinders had coolant in them. I'm expecting carnage, but maybe we'll be lucky and the head isn't cracked. I haven't got the head off yet but I cracked loose the head bolts and all the exhaust side head bolts were stretched and could have been broken loose with quarter inch ratchet. The intake side head bolts were all tight.

Spark plugs and a compression test. Plugs have ~13K/1 year/lots of track time so I just change 1/year which is the standard many use on these cars when tuned...10-15K for plugs. These are non-projected/2x colder than stock heat range performance plugs. Compresson in the green....180/177/180/178. 2x stock power/5 years/~100K miles. VW!
