what are some of the oil additives the pro's use

None.

They use oils formulated for the specific engine.

Disregard those pretty little shiny stickers; that is simply paid advertising.

Smokey Yunick himself pimped prolong. has anybody else read his books? old smokey was a true original. he was a consultant to GM for 25 years. in 87 he and a bunch of others were brought to detroit to drive all of the new GM cars and give their opinions. when asked his, smokey told them that they were all ****, to grind them up and start over again.
 
Hey, years ago, I bought an additve (PMT...Permanent Motor Treatment), one of the first teflon additives downunder...by mail-order.

Anyway...I was 16 at the time, and the company then started sending me brochures for "female attractant", some of those special creams for extending and maintaining, and those special pumps.

Try being 16 and explaining to your Mum that you only mail ordered a lubricant, and then all this junk mail turns up.
 
Frankly, I would never believe what some race car driver or race sponser or whatever is being paid to advertise. I have seen a couple of race car drivers promote some oil supplement one year and something else the next year. If somebody offered you a lot of money to say their oil supplement was great would you be willing to do it? And, what is great for a race car is not necessarily great for an ordinary car or truck. You do not put 'Nitro' (Nitromethane) in an ordinary car or truck engine.

About the only product I believe in anymore is Auto-RX. And I don't get paid to say that. It worked for me. And a lot of people at this web site say that Auto-RX has worked for them. Beyond that Lubegard is probably still a good supplement for transmission oil. And I like Gumout for engine system cleaning.

You could maintain your car or truck quite well just using motor oil of the correct viscosity and changing it often enough, using quality fuel, good transmisison fluid, etc. Although I still think a little Auto-RX would help the engine and even the transmission.

I think the avergae person is better off by not trying to play chemist.
 
regarding fuel additives, in all circuit racing series here straight pump or 'circuit' fuel is the only stuff allowed in the tank, (98-100 RON unleaded) and random samples are tested with a hand held tester, and if anything looks arwy, the sample goes off to the lab.
In F1, I believe all fuels supplied must conform to the FIA spec, and are chemically 'fingerprinted' at the start of the season. Any batch used from then on must conform or is deemed illegal.

As to adding anything to the oil, why, when as Molakule mentioned, often special 'brews' are made up by the oil companies for them. The Shell blokes used to do that here, and I believe the Mobil sponsored teams are at the least using M1R, which isn't available over the counter here at all.
Anyway, they are all too savvy to just dump something into the oil without fully dyno testing first, and mostly they use analysis to check on what is going on anyway.

There used to be a great story going around regarding contingency money, STP and Nascar. Anyone that ran a sticker had to use the product and they did, on their throttle linkages, shifter linkages, etc. I was told not a drop ever made it into a sump

It's tough to tell what actually works in pro racer's cars.
So much is sponsorship, or paid advertising.
Many use a Water Wetter type of product for the cooling system - this can help for sure with their specific needs.
Beyond the thinnest synthetic oil they can get away with, who know?
 
In talking with the owner of PROBLEND, he said a lot of both NASCAR and drag racers use their product. At something over $200 a pop. He said these guys will do just about anything to gain even the slightest advantage, so there're not going to admit anything.
 
I don't know about today, but in the past race cars at Indy had to use the products they deplayed decals for. That was the rules. I use to work for a crew chief that worked the Indy 500 in the 70s & 80s.
 
Custom built oils.

Call me a hypocrit for not practicing what I preach. Most here use premium oils , all the additives were already included. I have used: Synergyn, AutoRX, Marvel Mystery Oil, Berrymans B12 Chemtool.

The Chem Engineers & Chemists already figured out what was needed. We have the easy part simply buying it retail.

Good oil comes standard equipment with good additives.
 
yeah, and the best way to "clean" your engine before switching to synthetic is to run synth in you car for 100-500 miles, then repeat but this time leave it in per usual.....voila its clean and synth'd.
