What aftermarket keyfobs are reliable for Toyota?

I called the dealer today to get a price on a spare keyfob for our 2014 Highlander, along with the small key that slides into the fob....and it was just under $500. šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

Almost $300 for the fob, $65 for the tiny key blank, $45 to cut it, and almost $100 to program it. What planet are they on? He came back later and said he could do it for about $400....I pretty much told him again it won't happen.

With so many aftermarket options I'm wondering which have been reliable for anyone here who have used them.

I always prefer OEM. I have found that many Toyota dealers offer much better deals online than locally.
Plus, you CAN typically order keys and key fobs from the dealer online, you just have to submit a copy of your drivers license and registration as proof of ownership and identity.

I've shopped here (no tax, free shipping with minimum order). They have a sale this week:

I went with an eBay keyfob for my 2008 Prius and was able to program it myself with the "chicken dance." $26 for the part plus another $3.50 for my local hardware store to cut the emergency metal key. It's both a proximity key and a "stick it in the slot" style; I programmed both features. Even if the proximity part "breaks", I can stuff it in the slot and drive the car. If your Toyota doesn't have the slot, you can hold the key near the start-stop button as explained in your manual; good back-up if the battery dies.

There are aftermarket locksmiths who specialize in this if you want some tech support.

"Toms Keys" helped me with a Nissan Altima. I have used Ace Hardware as well.
The only OE key was from Lexus for the GS350; they gave it to me for free.

You can buy ā€œvirginizedā€ used/refurb key fobs on eBay. I have one in my possession for a 4th gen Prius(ID 14FBC). I’ll report back when I get the chance the program it into the car.

If you have an Autel or XHorse key tool, it can ā€œvirginizeā€ the fob and clear it for reprogramming into the car. Else, you still need to write new seed values and master immobilizer pwd into the car. And that requires locksmith-level access to Techstream/GTS, tokens from XHorse or a Chinese service, or knowing someone at the dealership.
