So what about using High-Temperature High-Pull Samarium-Cobalt Magnets which are extremely strong, on the ends of your filter to pull out any Ferrous metal and retain it there from circulation?

I have a Filter Mag, but have access to this grade of magnet for next to nothing and was thinking if it might be better.

I catch quite a bit of fine residue with my Filter Mag so I know magnetics are a good idea, but what about this powerful of a magnet.

Here are the specs on the magnets:

Temperature resistance -40° F to +572° F
Magnetic Pull Grade: 17

Also is it possible to pull any additives out of an oil with this magnet, anything Ferrous in engine oils? I don't think so, but in case I missed something...

I use hard disk magnets since I have a near infinite supply of old throw away hard disks. They are pretty strong and I'm seeing some super fine grit ferrous residue on them, but both of my current cars have less than 10k on them so it's probably expected.... Both the WRX and Accord have a vertical, dome down filter so I think it is even more important for dome end magnets so the particulate that settles on the bottom of the filter doesn't go straight through the bypass when cranking the engine up in the morning.

Those magnets you mention are pretty intense. Where do you get them?

I have a friend that works in a Physics lab up here and they use them for experiments but out of the ones they buy only certain ones are usable because the strengths have to match almost exactly so the others are simply tossed as they aren't returnable to their supplier.

I can't get too many or I would share them with everyone, but I can get a few here/there and they are one crazy powerful magnet...

When I stuck it to the side of my dads tool box to check it, I had a heck of a time getting to come off. I tried sliding it to the side of his box and it simply walked around the corner to the other side and proceeded with its death grip.
