Hi from Australia. I have used a local company to perform UOA of my track/street car. it seems their testing process has changed between analyses.

It's running Penrite 10 tenths oil.
Was on 5w-60. now on 15w-50.
As it is a road car used for trackdays etc, I thought I could run full synthetic at twice the price but twice as long.
The first result included 3 hillclimbs and 1 track event
The second analysis was after 2 track events.

The company that performed the UOA mentioned high silicon and oxidation. I am using a paper pod filter due to the local regulators. Oxidation could be due to the synthetic oil?

What does the forum think? Should I continue with the current program?

I don't see how your Zn,P, Mg, Ca went up on your second analysis?
Also Boron should not deplete on a UOA, if I'm not mistaking.

Oxidation would show high if this was ester based.

Thanks tudorart.
I think the increase in metals is due to running the oil for longer.
The oil is group 4 and 5

The first interval was at 1 track day and 500km
The second interval was 2 track days and 2000km.

Don't know about the boron. Possibly different additives in different grades of oil? That may explain the increase in TBN.

Metals and contamination still seem low enough and TBN high enough to increase the OCI further still.

However the oil is black and the most racers like to change the oil every event.

I thought I would do UOA to see if there was any need to perform an oil change after every event.

Just did another trackday and recorded more data.
Max oil temp is 125deg C
At this temp the engine is producing 43psi at 3000RPM

From what I understand, Group 4 and 5 oils should be OK at this temp. Pressures are still good so I think I will try a lighter oil and see if temps and pressures change.

The oil did about 2000km in addition to the track work. Mostly hills runs or the hour long trips to the track at 4000RPM.

The big part of doing the UOA was to determine how long I can go between changes. However, being synthetic oil, I can't go by oxidation. Also TBN would not be an accurate indicator because I do maybe 500km per month.

Should I just keep trying longer intervals until the UOA changes significantly?

I envy your garage Caterham! I wish I had a Caterham but they are dear in Aus.

Hi djc,

Your oil temp's are higher than I would have thought but 125C is no problem for any syn oil including GP III so oxidation should definitely not be anything to be concerned about running a GP 4/5 oil.
Yes I would run a much longer OCI at least until the TBN drops significantly. Don't be concerned that you don't drive the car much. The TBN is a good indicator of when the oil should be changed.

Your oil pressure certainly doesn't appear to be excessive at 43 psi @ 3,000 rpm. What is it at 5,000 or 6,000 rpm?
What is your maximum OP when the oil is cold at high rev's?

What engine is in your Westfield?

Caterhams are expensive in Canada as well and are problematic to import privately. They can be acquired more cheaper in the States.

Interesting. Thought we'd never see a UOA on Penrite 10 Tenths. It is a moderately priced Grp IV/V synthetic at half the price of Redline. Nice beefy add pack. Never seen boron that high before!!

Btw is this the 10 Tenths "racing" or "premium" variant?

Send virgin samples of the oils in to get oxidation readings. Ester-based oils have high oxidation numbers to start with.
Group 4 and 5 oils should not be oxidized by short term exposure to 125C temperature.

Holy smokes, look at that boron!

Are all Aussie oil companies this brash with their additive packs? :P
These oils look like they were formulated by someone from this site

20 grades are still taboo it seems

Thanks for sharing your results!

What was the oil analysis company that you used? How did you find them and would you use them again?
