Went Oil Filter "Window Shopping" Today

Today, while my parents were looking for something at K-Mart, I decided to head over to the oil filter section and do some filter "window shopping." Yes, they only carry 30-day Orange Cans of Death, but I was curious about filter sizes in general.

My 96 Saturn and many other Toyota V6s take the Fram PH-3614. I found that the PH-3600 was about 30-40% larger, yet there was not difference in the size of the "mounting area" of the filter, but the only difference was in the length. Can this filter be safely used on a Saturn?

Also to note, I looked at the Fram PH-4967, which is a filter made for the Toyota Corolla 1.8L and many Toyota 4-cyl engines. I also found that the PH-7317, which is a filter used on the Civic and possibly other Honda models, has the same sized "mounting area" as the PH-4967, except for the fact that it is about 30% longer.

So the question is this, can the PH-7317 and the PH-3600 be used as an oversized filter in applications requiring the PH-4967 and the PH-3614, respectively?

I am using a PH-3600, actually a Totalgrip equivalent on my 99 SL2. Luke over at Saturnfansforum uses the oversized filter, and has over 410,000 on his SL2. I have had no problems. It is a little tight, but nothing solid to knock against.

The PH7317 and all filters for Honda use 20x1.5mm threads, while the PH3614 and all Toyota filters have 3/4-16 threads. You can't use a filter intended for a Honda on a Toyota.

If you do a search, you will find a lot of discussion on oversized filters, and PH3600 and its equivalents (Motorcraft FL-400S comes to mind) are often used for oversized applications. I personally use SuperTech's ST-3614 on my Corolla that specifies the ST-4967.

Most BITOG members steer clear of Fram.

The 7317 is the oversize for the 6607 in the Supertech, I am guessing the #'s are the same?
It is what I may use on my Hyundai Tucson.

7317 won't work for your Totoya. 4967 has 3/4-16 threads but a slightly smaller gasket diameter then the 3614-3600-16-8 filters. You may want to try the longer filter, but remember the engine moves so watch for clearance issues. Also you want to try the 16, it's the same length as the 3614 but larger in diameter.

Yes, the PH3600 (or it's equivelents) can be used on the 1.9L Saturn engine. I did some researching in the Purolator product manual, and the PH3600 best matches the various specifications (flow, bypass PSI rating, etc). I used it for over 50K on my last Saturn with no problems. I prefer the Purolator (part # eludes me at the moment, but can be referenced by searching a '92 Ford Aerostar w/ 3.0L V6), or the Motorcraft FL-400S.

The filter physicaly fits just fine, in fact it makes it easier to reach the filter because of the added length. I found that with the longer filter, it can be removed from the 1.9L engine, just by reaching through the passenger side wheel well.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Purolator equivalent to the 3600 or 400S is the L/PL20195.

You are correct. PH3600 = FL-400S = L/PL20195
