Well this is unfortunate ... (pet misfortune)

Our big brown Main Coon likely has injection-site sarcoma (Cancer). It is typically caused by the reaction to Rabies and FIV vaccinations. The probability of having this happen is 1/10,000-30,000. He's currently fine and the mass isn't very large but it's basically a death sentence even with surgery and radiation/chemo. I'm talking 2 yrs max. My wife is taking it hard and it's slowing hitting me. The only good thing is that he's 11yrs old rather than say 7yrs.

Ugh.
Count your eleven years as a blessing. From the sounds of it, this is hitting you hard. Be glad you have had the great time you have had. Most pets aren't with us our entire lives but we are their entire lives. Sounds like you have had a wonderful experience and I would encourage you to continue to show the love that you have. My lady friend I sit next to in church has stage four lung cancer and there are no markers for environmental or genetic. I'm going to lose her soon, but I'm not throwing the baby out with the bath water. Live in the present and make time count with people and pets alike.

Rent or Buy it, you learn how special our pets can be from these two movies.

I read the Art Of Racing In The Rain and also watched the movie. The book was a good read.

Holy crap!

I did a 🤮🤯 yesterday when paying $217 for annual checkup and shots!
That's not a bad price. If I were a cat or dog and my owner didn't provide health checkups and dental I'd run away. :p

I know a lady who in an act of misguided selfishness kept her deadly ill Wheaton terrier alive for years past his expiration date. Extending his suffering was worth many tens of thousands of dollars to her. I felt so bad for this poor dog who was slowly starving to death because he no longer could eat or drink sufficient quantities of food. He was sprouting tumors all over his body. She subjected him to surgeries and weekly IVs. I was expressing how I felt about what she was doing and she understood but her selfishness won. A single lady, working as a medical researcher, she had the means to do what she knew not to do. "I can't let him go." Cruel love. She's been without a dog for over two years now but she's again looking.

It was going to run no less than $5,000 to try to save our guy.

Sorry for your loss. Lost our golden retriever last year and now my old dog Fred who turns 11 in Nov, is developing many cancer tumors and loosing his vision. Older animals just don't handle surgery well unfortunately. Vets will do it for the money not the animals well being. Had an old school vet for many years and he always said once they get to be old it is more important to just keep them happy vs surgery. He went on to say the day will come you will see them not happy, then it is time. Thankfully our new vet has the same belief after our old vet retired. The time is coming for my buddy Fred sooner than I want but his quality of life is more important than my desire for more time with him. It sucks as does life a lot of times but with time it will heal.

Sorry to hear this. Like many older Americans, I've lost pets, and it always hurts, sometimes I think it is best not to get another. However, there are really good animals that deserve a loving home and quality care.

My Norwegian Elkhound is failing lately. Heart failure issues (I have her on Metvedin and diuretic) and some form of random neuro problem that causes her to keep moving her right shoulder and stepping with her R paw non stop. It is very sad to see her decline like this.

Not an easy choice to make. It sucks getting old... for pets and people.

Tears into my soul seeing my folks slowly getting old and less capable. I only see them every 4-5 years or so, so it's always a drastic change. Especially when most of my memories are from ~25+ years ago as a teen and young adult.

I couldn't ever be the person putting animals to sleep.... well expect the annoying never stop yipping bite your legs dogs (kidding... mostly)

UPDATE: Last month the brother(littermate) of the cat we lost last year was also diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on his side just under his skin. Strange how this occured exactly 1 yr after his brother. He's 12 yrs old and we're scheduled to have the tumor removed on this Tuesday. However, my wife is having a hard time with it after seeing how invasive it was along with the recovery time it required. Yet she said she's confident in my judgement on things like this because, compared to her, I'm less emotional about it. My position is that he will probably die within 3-6 months if we do nothing and although we can't guarantee clean margins we can afford to remove it so we should go ahead and have it done despite the risk. I know our pets won't last forever but I also don't want to see him suffer as the tumor grows and the cancer slowly takes his life. Sure the cancer will likely return within 18 months and yes he's 12 yrs old but he's in great shape for his age and size. I think if he were 14 or older I would be less inclined to have the surgery performed.

I'm interested in your thoughts on this.

I’m in agreement with you…

Do the surgery… If my cat Chloe had a similar circumstance… And yeah she is 13 years old.. . I would do the surgery man…

Just take care of your cat as best you can like you have done. Sorry you are having to go through this stuff again.

I would also do the surgery.

Watching him decline in pain from not getting it removed wouldn't be ethical as we both agree. If you have him for another 2 years that is money well spent.

Ugh.
Sorry to hear. I always thought that pets shouldn't get cancer. Dogs and cats eat who knows what when we aren't looking.

Very Sorry.
All pet people understand your pain.
The worst time is when we can see their end approaching.
I have the cremains of my four dogs on the floor in the bathroom closet, planning to scatter them, hopefully next summer.

I also have my late wife's ashes (42 year marriage) working toward her memorial. Obstacles abound.

Comfort your wife, cry on each other's shoulder.
Times like these we should remember our vows.
