I am looking for a welding jacket. I have worn all leather ones at a welding class. Now looking online I see some all leather and some with fireproof chest fabric and leather arms.
What positions will you be in? I often do it on a creeper, with limited space under a car, and my helmet banging on stuff. I use a "normal" leather coat and it compromises in the expected ways, being too baggy, having a wrist gap, etc.
The type of protection you need depends on the position you are welding. For the most part I just use a flame retardant sleeve on my left arm. If you are left handed, then your would wear it on your right arm.
I have a leather welding jacket made by Black Stallion. It is heavy duty and well made for the money.
It does get a little hot inside the jacket when welding in the summer heat, but during the rest of the year it works perfect for my needs and offers very good protection.
Seems to work fine. Actually it works great. Got a good sunburn wearing a thin shirt running some 6011s, and I was not happy, so I got some proper gear. Also got a leather apron for rare times I am on my back.
A full leather jacket would be nice, but unwearable in South TX heat.
