A few weeks ago, my computer suddenly started making the sound as if I'm disconnecting something from a USB port. The "BING-bong". It also pauses everything when doing this. Mouse and screen pause during a gaming session is very annoying.

Any ideas? Thanks.

OK - I'll ask the stupid question(s):

Do you have anything else in the USB ports? Perhaps a USB mouse or keyboard's connection is intermittent or the devices are failing?

Also, does this system sound indicate anything else besides USB device connectivity?

Mine did that a few weeks ago. The screen would blink and go black too and for a split second it would display the desktop. Turned out I had a bad monitor. Maybe turn off your monitor and see if the noise problem persists, or try connecting a known good monitor.

All USBs (keyboard and mouse) are firmly in place with no failures.

That sound is the only one I relate to disconnecting a USB device.

Jimmy: my screen doesn't go black, everything just pauses with the sound.

Danno: I just tried that and got a "bing-bong" 30 seconds later.

I think somewhere in device manager you can see what devices are connected to USB. Watch that change as the noise happens and you might find the culprit.

Actually the screen going blank and briefly displaying the desktop is a feature of Windows 7 you may have accidently activated. In the very lower right hand corner of your taskbar, to the right of the time and date, there's a small vertical bar that if you put your mouse over it, what ever is on the screen disappears and your desktop is shown.

This allows you to see your desktop without closing or minimizing the screens you have up at the top. Move the mouse away from the bar and whatever you had on the screen re-appears. I forget what Windows calls this feature, but it's on Windows 7 which I have and probably is on other releases (ie Vista) also.
