Hi all,

So, my son just had new tires put on his 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe (2.4L.) We just did the rear pads/rotors in March 2025, so I told him to have them check the fronts while they had the tires off. They called and said there is only like 1MM of pad left.

Don't they have wear indicators? We have had no noise or brake issues with this car.

I just think it's weird? Not sure I believe them, but maybe I'm wrong.

I have gotten some brand name pads that did not have the wear indicators attached, but came as separate clip on's to be attached during installation. Unfortunately there were no instructions and I didn't have the time or patience to research out how or where to fit them in, so that car is running without the squealers. Maybe something similar happened with your car.

Could be. Not sure if the pas are OEM or not. The rear were OEM (originals.) Not sure about the front. If they did change them out at some point, maybe they didn't have wear indictors. I'll find out this weekend. If I pull out the pads and they have a lot more than 1mm, he and I are gonna have a chat.

That's about how much was left on front pads of my son in law's Tacoma and there was no squeal yet. I replaced rotors and pads. Pads didn't make full contact with rotors, rotors were rusty, all factory original on 2021 Taco, 68k km. He had tires rotated at dealer a few days before that and they told him there was 10% left... Just looking at rotors with wheels still on I could tell he needed new brakes.

Thanks. His rotors look nice and shiny and smooth. No issues at all. I'm going to pull them this weekend and do a run-out on rotor then a pad slap. Putting on Bosch quiet-cast.

Trust, but verify!

I bought this set of brake lining thickness qauges for $12 and change. Not that I couldn't tell when pads were worn out, but to verify the dealership's numbers on their comprehensive annual checkup. And... they add color inside the toolbox drawer.

Pulled his front wheels this morning. Pads were just about to kiss the wear indicators. So, it was time.

If the guy said they’re about to hit the wear indicators, that would have been fine. He said there was only 1mm of pad left, which wasn’t true……

In either case, it was time to change them. Did a run out of the rotors and they were good. New clips, greased the pins, made sure everything nice and clean (I’m in the south, so nothing was rusted.). New Bosch blue ceramic pads. I prefer quiet cast, but he’s on a budget. Should work fine for him.

Changed his oil too.

Thanks all for the reply’s.
