We leased a '23 Mach-E - too good to pass up

I see the VW dealer in Myrtle Beach SC is offering $17,500 for a ID4 lease. I did not read the details, I suspect that is off the most costly version because I think I saw the words up to.

I like the Emporia, it's not horribly expensive, $399 on either the jungle river site or direct from Emporia.com. Good documentation on their website and an actual 800 number to call. However the hardwire option requires a junction box and a splice. Not averse to that, splices to support 6AWG are readily available at home improvement stores.

I do have an inch-lbs torque wrech - this seems to be required for all high amperage connections, junction box or not, and I'm sure the splice is no different. Also it seems that you need a layer of electrical tape, then a layer of electrical mastic, and then another layer of electrical tape.

It would be easier to just bring a 6/3 Romex into the charger box and attach to a terminal, but in my browsing today, I don't see anything like that.

The problem I have with getting a proper junction box is that the subpanel is sunk behind the sheetrock, and the Emporia is a flush mount device, and the pigtail for the hardware will also be flush mount coming out of the Emporia box. The 6/3 I bring out of subpanel would be behind the sheetrock. I just got back from my lunch hour at the Team Orange home improvement store and the bits I need, don't seem to be there. I think I'm going to have to go to a real electical supply shop.

Oh and did I mention this needs to look decent at least?

Well, I installed the Hubble plug after all and I'm using the Ford travel charger for now. Man, that Romex 6/3 is tough to work with. I had to use bolt cutters to cut it. It laughed at my regular wire cutters.

As for the why, we are going to have to make an impromptu trip out of the country for a family issue, and that made buying an aftermarket hard wired charger a money issue.

But that said I have gotten up to 7KW charging out of the Ford charger so I hope it holds up for a little while. Eventually I will get something else.

Plug and breaker are cool to the touch by the way. Glad I bought this Hubbell plug with all the horror stories about melting plugs. Everything was torqued to specification as well, and antioxidant brown gel was used (lightly) on the connections. 75 in-lbs for the Hubbell plug and 45 in-lbs for the breaker terminals.

That's a good solution. As you say, you can modify/upgrade later. The Hubbell was cheap insurance.
How many amps does it pull? Which breaker did you install? Wire run length?
Mine was almost 60'. Worked great for years.

The 2018 M3 Mid Range pulled 32A; the new car pulls 40A.

I think that’s always been the case. Long range and Performance have gotten 40a, but anything lesser including LFP were capped at 32a.

The Ford charger pulls 32A. I put a 50A breaker though with the intention of getting something that's 40A at least, eventually.

40 amp would be OK on a 50 amp circuit
You wouldn’t want any more load on that in order to maintain a 20% safety margin.
Typically safety margin for any circuit is 80% load of what the circuit is designed for

Yeah that’s how all chargers are labeled for continuous rate. It’s definitely causing confusion for some new to EVs.

I really think that they should make an ICE version of this vehicle, and not call it a Mustang.

The Mach-E platform is a re-worked version of C2, which is also used for the Escape, Bronco Sport, and Maverick, so in a way you can. I'm still very much against the fact that they called this thing a Mustang.
