I bought a new used car and I'm sure the dealer put a quick coat of no-name wax on it. I plan
to apply collinite 845 without taking off the old wax. Would it affect how long the 845 lasts?
Thank you for your info

I would also at least wash-clay-wax. Even if the old wax doesn't affect the durability of subsequent coats, the clay bar will help by removing other contaminants

Cleaner/polish would remove the old wax too. Clay is aimed more at paint that doesn't need correction. I presumed that the car was new coming from a dealer.

There is nothing "new" about claying. Cleaner polish won't remove bonded contaminates like a clay bar (or alternative) will.

I used claybar for the first time on one of my vehicles a few months back. I really enjoyed the glass like feel of the paint afterwords. I also think after waxing the car has more depth to the shine but that could very well just be me thinking its nicer.

Why's that? The 845 that he wants to apply is very durable and that won't last a year, so the junk that the dealer put on definitely won't survive for a year.

+1 If the [censored] the dealer put on lasts a month it would be something to write home about.

Did the dealer use Shinola? The only cars I've ever waxed were cars in my family other than my own. On my own I have only ever used polymer sealants and I like the results. An application of a product like Merzerna sealant holds up well up to a year. Not sure about a very rainy or cold climate.

I shared your experience 2yrs ago. Before that I doubted the effects of claying. I just did not see how it would improve polishing. Was I in for a pleasant surprise. It also does not take long to do. It is well worth the effort. Follow with a polish and wax or sealant and you have a good clean Base. Enjoy.

Yes it will. If you do not have the means to machine polish it then clay or a chemical paint cleaner would add to the longevity. Here is one example of the many cleaners available:

The longevity of a wax is MOSTLY affected by the number of hours the waxed surface is exposed to the sun.

If you park your car in a garage at home and at work, and it rarely sits exposed (except for surface parking when shopping and eating), a waxed surface can last for a year if the car's exposure to direct sunlight is extremely limited.

If your car is parked outside all the time, expect most waxes to last about 4-6 weeks.

My Honda is parked indoors all the time. I LOVE Collinite #915. I think it's the best all around wax they make. I wax my car 2 times a year. It's all it needs.

But my wife's Subaru is outside ALL THE TIME, so unless I want to wax her car every month, it's pointless. This past spring, here is what I applied:

After some polishing, I applied a lay of Sonax Polymer Net Shield, and then a layer of ReJex. After 2 days of cure time for the ReJex, I applied a coat of Collinite #915. The Sonax will provide the protection, the ReJex was applied to protect the Sonax, and the Collinite was applied to slow down the deterioration of the ReJex.
