My home is from the mid-1930s. It has all copper pipe.
When doing some work sometime back, we found a lot of dirt or sludge on the walls of the pipes inside. As I understand it, this is normal, and usually water pressure keeps it forced against the walls for the most part.
Still, because of that and the Cl in water, we installed a whole house filter. It does catch a lot. It builds a brown-colored coating on the surface and there is a lot of dirt/solids in the filter and housing.
We have had the filter on for about a year now. Over the last few months, we have noticed that when we turn water on at our faucets, sometimes it now really shoots out strongly for a second, then slows down to a more normal, steady rate. More recently, Ive noticed that on our single-handle mid-1970s kohler faucet (pull out to turn on type), when we get these pressure spikes, the faucet will actually start dripping water, I guess as it forces itself through. If I open the fauct, it will shoot out for a second, then revert to normal flowrate.
Why would this happen? It never has before. Do you think it has to do with our (maintained) whole house filter? Never seen this before with the filter installed. Do you think the pipes are slowly cleaning themselves somehow causing this? Only when the main water pressure is shut off and then restarted does the water have any coloration from this sludge. The rest of the time, there is nothing to see.
