If gas floats on water, how will you get a sample? If you stick a hose in the tank and it hits bottom, you will get more water then if you draw from the middle.
How will you get gas out of the tank? I'm told that newer vehicles have some system that won't let a tube run into the fuel tank. But I've never tried.
Check the recycle symbol on a gas can. You may find other vessels, such as windshield washer bottles, with the same plastic. Glass would be even better. Spaghetti sauce jar?
Gas has been in my boats tank and outboard motor while in storage for over a year. Was going to siphon boat tank and put gas in my vehicles. After which I was going to fill the boat up with fresh fuel and stabilizer.

If the plastic jar has a recycling code of 1 or 2, it will be gasoline and 10% Ethanol resistant. I recently removed ~1/2 gallon of bad gasoline from a pressure washer and stored it in a 2 liter Pepsi bottle (recycling code 1) for a week before disposing of it at the municipal hazmat recycling center. The plastic bottle did not soften, leak or exhibit any degradation during that period.

If there is significant amounts of water in the gas I would not put it in your vehicles. If it was stored with a good fuel stabilizer like STA-BIL 360 Marine it is probably fine to run it in the boat. A bigger boat should have a fuel/water separator filter like a Racor unit with a glass bowl that lets you see if there is water in the fuel.
