Wasps

Before you deal with these wasps, have some tobacco handy, (a cigarette, cigar, chewing tobacco or snuff). If you get stung again, wet the tobacco, (for example, break open the cigarette, moisten the tobacco with spit, working the spit into the tobacco with your fingers) and slap it on the spot that got stung. Hold it there for 20 to 30 minutes, (you can tie it on with a rag or even put a bandaid over the tobacco to hold in it place - the longer it sits there the better). The wet tobacco will draw the poison out of the sting and it's won't be sore or swell. My Uncle showed me this when I was little and I've done it ever since - works every time. You'll know it's drawing the poison when you feel it slightly burning at the spot of the sting. The quicker you can do this, the better.

If the wasps are hidden in a weedy area, take a garden hoe and gently work your way into the weeds, carefully pushing the weeds aside. Stay alert. When you start seeing two or three wasps, stop and look around - don't move. If only two or three are present and buzzing around, move a little farther into the weeds, gently pushing them out of the way with the hoe. The closer you come to the nest, the more wasps you'll see. DON"T PANIC and always be ready to run. Eventually, you'll see the nest. When you find it, back away slowly, (unless you bump them or make them mad. If that happens, run like Jesse Owens). Give them about 20 minutes to calm down, then return with spray can and "terminate with extreme prejudice."

Tried once taking a big nest out with a fire extinguisher. Just got several stings, empty extinguisher, and a neighbor laughing.
Bought and have used cans of Whoop A$$ (errr wasp spray) and it works much better, spray 2 cans at the same time... and have an escape path/route. But if I come up against a huge nest, I'm getting on the phone and calling in the bee army.

Also got several stings motorcycle riding. I thought that was smoke going across the road... nope. 11 stings to the face and few elsewhere. Still made it to fire station, one eye swelled shut and didn't know how many/bad I was stung.

It's simple really wear the right attire to prevent stings. If you going to attack a nest at least protect yourself. I've worn full protection but left my face open which I was conscience of. Wear a ski mask if necessary. Wasp aren't going to attack unless attacking their turf 'NEST" which they will defend.

They were in the ground in a weedy situation which is why we didn't know that they were there, until I started strimming and that made them very cross. Last night I went out and got some Spectracide PRO and had a go at them in the middle of the night. This morning I only saw two so maybe that's it.
Thanks for all your advice.

I had a big [censored] hornets nest hanging in the yard this summer. I was tempted to leave it, they won't bother you if you don't bother them, but the neighbor's cat likes to visit and I was worried he would kill one and cause the whole nest to swarm on him I picked up some poison and sprayed into the nest one night, which got rid of them. I left it hanging, I read somewhere that they won't build a nest close to where another is.

Let us all take a moment and be thankful that we don't live in China.

I thought that was an Asian giant hornet? Maybe that particular picture is wrong, but it's what came up when I search for pictures of a Vespa mandarinia to post.

Either way, the link takes you to a description of an issue China is having with swarms of the largest wasp in the world. Something I don't think any of us would ever want to have to deal with.

Yes, it is, but I was just kidding about it being a sci-fi alien insect from a long ago TV series (google it, "Zanti Misfits" episode), due to it's enormity.
