Was my timing belt changed already ?

Ok car is a 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage with 90k miles. I just pulled the timing cover off to check the belt. It had the numbers Gate T288 on the belt.

So im guessing this is a aftermarket belt right ?

Whats the stock 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage Timing Belt look like ?

So i should be good to go for another 30k miles right ?

I think the OEM belt for a lot of Mitsubishi stuff is Contitech. You could always call the dealer and ask who makes the OEM belts - they might know.

Gates are aftermarket and very good quality belts, so yes, your belt has most likely been changed. I really doubt Mitsu uses Gates belts as OEM.

Is this an interference engine?
If so, if in doubt, change it out.
The consequences of hoping that the belt is okay are just too severe to consider.

Since you had the cover off, what did the belt look like? Was it cracked and dry between the teeth?

Belt looks good no cracks teeth look good to dont see any wear So im pretty sure its a new belt

Agreed, 100%. Belts, rollers, tensioner & bolts are cheap - engines are not!

Unless you have documentation of exactly what and when it was replaced, I would change it out just for piece of mind. While the belt may look fresh, you do not know if they half-A55ed and did not change out the other parts.

This most likely is a round toothed belt, not an old square toothed style.
They go a lot longer.
Figure 60k for an old sylt belt, and of course many go much longer.
Figure 90+k for a new style.
If you look in good shape, adjust the tensioner and check it in 20k more.
At least, you can accumulate parts and tools in the meantime.
I really recommend new pulleys with a belt. They cause the belt to go out, not the other way around!

Last weekend I changed the timing belt on my 03 mitsubishi 2.4
It had 68,000 miles on it. Manual said to change it at 60,000.

The old belt was stamped "Mitsubishi" and had the diamond star on
it. I replaced it with a gates... It was not a fun job..

Ok thanks everybody looks like i have a semi new belt on it already. Im going to try and get another 30k out of it then if i still have the car ill replace it at 120k

i would guess it has been changed, factory belts for the most part will have the car manufacturers name on it and not the name of the belt manufacturer,gates makes most honda t-belts but they are stamped honda and not gates.not to say that mitsubishi does the same thing but if i was a betting man...

Dont forget to do the waterpump while you are in there if you do change the belt, because like Ross said, its not fun! especially having to do it twice (Tbelt has to come off to do the waterpump on a 4g63)

And Just to add insult to the job, Mitsubishi added a second timing belt for the 2.4 in 2003.(4g64) It is called a balance belt and is located behind the main timing belt.

For the OP, I would just inspect your belt every year It should be good at least up to 120,000 miles.
