I was in upper New York state for the new year long weekend. Stopped into Autozone and picked up the following :

Edge was 7.99$/QT. Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter was 12.99$. I didn't really care how much they cost, neither are available in Canada as far as I can tell. Gonna run GC that I have now till the spring and then in goes Edge and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter.

It seems as we were thinking the same thing. I went down to bellingham today and took advantage of the price of Pennzoil Platinum, and the motorcraft filters. $23 for 5 qts instead of 35$ for 5 quarts is a good deal. Also picked up the motorcraft filter for my truck since I'd have to go to the dealer to get it.

Found a Fram Xtended Guard XG3614 for my stratus. That I haven't seen yet in Canada, and is good for 10,000 miles 16,000km.

Cool! They have so much more choice in the states it's unreal. Canadian Tire sells the Fram XG filters. That's where I got my XG3600 for my Jeep Liberty.

Hmm, I too made a pilgrimage to upstate New York over the holidays. I came back with apples and maple syrup. I'm not sure which of us has it worse but I think I'd trade with you for a week to see. Okay, at the risk of getting my BITOG account closed I think I'd rather have to travel for motor oil than apples and syrup. :)

Keep visiting us, we love that colorful money!

Next time, catch the Edge on sale at Advance Auto Parts (diagonal from the intersection of Exit 37 & Rt. 3) for $24.99 for 5 quarts with a PureOne filter. They run that sale every now and then. Put in 12901 for the zip code and look over the flyer. Our Wal-Mart doesn't carry Castrol Edge.

The funny thing is that I enjoy my trips north to Canadian Tire. Lots of neat stuff.

Went to Plattsburgh again a few weeks ago to pick up friends at the airport. Every time we go, we make sure to shop around. Only 1 hour away from Montreal. And with the loony almost at par and sales tax only what? 6%, No problem.

So, it's no surprise to see all those Quebec plates in mall parking lots.

Since my GF had stayed more than 48 hours in the US, she picked up 2 good bottles of red wine that cost only $7. or $8.US but run twice that overhere.

Oh yeah, don't forget to fill her up as well. The needle falls like a rock with the ethanol but it's still way cheaper.

The tax is actually 8% (4% State and 4% County tax), or just the 4% county tax on clothing items under $100. But I know what you mean. Paid my share of QST/GST when I lived in MTL.

The free parking at the airport is a definite hit with the snow birds. I used to fly out of MTL back when the USD was stronger and the airfare taxes and fees weren't so crazy.

For ethanol-free gas, and some of the best gas prices in the area, stop at Buck's Car Wash, or Buck's Discount Center near Exit 38-N. Turn right at the first light, and both are on the right and not too far from the turn.

I often go down to Plattsburgh when I'm in MTL vising family. I head down for the day, hit Lowes, Walmart, Friendlys for lunch, gas up at either Mobil or Shell and then head back. Plattsburgh is a great town!

I also saw that they have an Advanced Auto Parts...never heard of that store before. Any good?

Is that coming from the north or the south?

You can use Exit 38-N from either the north or south. Both will point you north onto NY-374 after exiting (direct ramp from the north, cloverleaf ramp from the south). NY-22 is the first light (right turn).

Just make sure it's 38-N, as 38-S will dump you onto Boynton Ave.

Ah yes I did oops. Hehe I've been visiting Plattsburgh since I was a kid. Grand parents had a trailer a Kings Bay. I guess I should of gone into AAP for Edge instead of AZ...oh well.

If it makes you feel better, the sale wasn't running during your visit. But it seems to come back every now and then.

Check out both the AAP and AZ web sites regularly for their flyers. Put in the zip code for Plattsburgh, 12901.

The Rebate/Sales/Promo forum is usually right on top of the good stuff from both. If a good sale lines up with your next visit, even better!

Whenever I'm in States, I am always hitting some auto stores or Walmart for oil, the regular prices they have for oil often beat our discount prices and that is with the exchange.

Also they have many more choices when it comes to parts, for example, spark plugs for my Mazda 3 are only available either from a dealer or Parts Source at, get this, $25 a pop and they only have NGKs. In US they have NGKs that are $10 each, Motorcrafts, Autolite and some more. I got Motorcraft for $5 each, so the whole set cost me less than one spark plug in Canada, talk about rip off.

Same goes for brake pads, while I don't need them yet, I've been looking for some deals and CT doesn't carry pads for Mazda 3, Parts Source have Thermo Quiets at $120 plus tax, but no rear pads, that leaves only dealer, which at least is in line with other stores at about $100 each for front and rear. So last time I was in US, I also bought Bendix pads at about $50 each front and rear and they're just laying on the shelf waiting their turn.

With the Canadian dollar so high, I always think ahead of my maintenance schedule and try to find the pest prices for the parts, fluids I need, google is really good for that, so the next time I go to US, I have a shopping list ready.

Also, on my last trip I was able to locate all the auto stores in the area in google maps, I then checked which stores have what I want, NAPA, AZ, AAP, all have pretty good websites, and you can put in the zip codes and it will tell you their inventory. I went really prepared, I did not have to drive around at all, just went to a couple of stores, bought what I needed and I was done.

I picked up some Autolite Double Platinum spark plugs for my KJ while I was in AZ. The only plugs they carry here in Canada for mj Jeep are the [censored] NGKs.

I've been wanting to try Castrol Edge ever since it came out. I'm currently running GC and I'm very happy with the results, blown away. Night and day difference vs conventional oil that was in my Jeep when I bought her. Edge should be great as well. If not then well at least I tried it.

The oil filter choices in the states is crazy! So many brands!!!! I picked up the...M1-209. Should go well with Edge or GC.

I usually head down to Plattsburgh every 3-4 months. Love that town!
