Was I in the wrong? Selling car on Craigslist...

well consider the scenario where the guy says I'm going to pay you $50 for you to hold the car for me to see on Tuesday.
assume the Seller agrees and accepts the PayPal, but goes around and sells the car anyway to another full price payer.

then the tables are flipped and buyer has a valid case to demand restitution or performance and seller is in the wrong even if the seller refunded the $50.

that's when your arguments about in writing vs verbal agreements and $ limits come into play and you go to judge judy to explain contracts to you on tv.

I was selling a cement mixer, had a guy confirm he was leaving his house, text me for directions, then just quit responding and never shows up. No communication from him after that.

Lot of angst over nothing... First on site with cash in hand is it...

If I've got a time setup with someone within a few hours, I don't tend to try to set something else up prior to that. Show up late, and I may sell to someone else.

If you ask a few days out, I just flat out tell you I can set it up, but if someone else with cash comes first, I'm sorry...

Too many people who like to play games and waste time. If you want it bad enough, come and get it. Last few things I've sold have all been on the market less than 2 days, and I'm done...

I hate Kijiji/craigslist for flakes, no shows, liars. I always show up on time with the asking price in cash and negotiate from there. I never put an ad up with my phone # or address, only email contact and if they want the item I give them my # and address, too many times at 2 am I've had strung out people calling me acting crazy or randomly show up at my house.

OP you did nothing wrong, you have to be quick if you want to scoop up a good deal, if he wanted the car badly enough he would have made arrangements to see it sooner.

You give out all your information on CL? Not smart. I don't give out any information until I get agreement on price.

I think anybody who has dealt with Craigslist is going to assume, by default, that the people they are going to run across are flakes...because that term applies quite well in the majority of cases.
When we bought our vacation condo, it contained a number of small and old beds that we just wanted gone. The wife placed a Craigslist ad describing them accurately and offering them free for the taking, and there was immediate interest...I don't know how many times she drove up there to meet people only to be shown up with some lame excuse like, "Oh, that was too far for me to drive!" Some folks finally showed up on a weekend we were all up there to have fun, and they were actually really nice folks who had limited resources and a sudden need for beds due to a family emergency. Thing was, they didn't seem to have thought in advance about how they were going to take the beds with them...they were driving a tiny Toyota sedan. They seemed to be hinting that I should transport them in my little SUV, and I told them I would donate the string to tie them onto their vehicle. I'm sure those folks got pulled over at least once on the long drive home. I think they took two and I can't remember how we got rid of the third, but the whole process took over a year...I told the wife over and over that we had to just take them to the dump and pay the $$$ to dispose of them, but she just wouldn't listen.
She had also learned that it made excellent business sense to advertise her garage sales (which I despised) on Craigslist ahead of time to increase foot traffic, and she made a point to mention particular big-ticket items that might draw interest and that people would need to have substantial cash on hand to buy. One item she was selling was a very nice child's bike trailer/sports stroller that our daughter had outgrown, and somebody contacted her asking if they could come 5-10 minutes before the "official" opening to get a first look at it. My wife said fine, and then 3-4 people showed up an HOUR before the sale started. One of them pointed at the trailer/stroller and said he had asked to see it early and he liked it. He then said she had also promised to sell it for $25 ($200 tag on it)! My wife laughed, and the guy started getting chippy with her...I had to amble over and ask why he was yelling at my wife in our garage. Of course, this wasn't the guy who had gotten in touch with her, he was just fishing...the other person never showed up.

I've found you really just need to assume the worst on Craigslist...I wanted to try ski racing a while ago and found that my old intermediate rec skis I brought down from our condo just didn't cut it on the sheer ice of the local NASTAR run. I found a guy selling used slalom skis of an appropriate size and we met in a parking lot, they were well used but seemed solid enough (a coworker who worked race courses on weekends helped me out here). I probably overpaid a bit because I needed them soon and immediately ran them down to a nearby ski shop to get them sized for my boots and have them do a torque test...failed the latter miserably, one binding was just shot to the point of being dangerous. They suggested new race bindings, and I told them they were going in the trash before I spent that kind of money on them. They then put one of their techs on the phone and he told me he had parts for those old bindings in his personal stash, but it would take a 6 pack of really good beer to pry them from his hands...done.
Turned out the guy selling the skis raced the same night as me, he had been a college racer (VERY fast) and also handled tuning and repairs for his NASTAR team...he knew that binding was shot and didn't tell me. Happened to catch his eye in the lodge on a race night and he hustled the other way in a big hurry...

That's a good point. I have purchased multiple cars on Craigslist and know how competitive it can be. I wouldn't of been ticked off if the tables were turned. In fact, the same thing happened to me a few years back when I was looking for the car I sold in this post.

I called on a car but couldn't make it until the next day due to my work schedule and their schedule. The car sold that next AM before I got to it. The owner called me and told me a few hours before I left to see the car, no biggie, my search continued.

I don't think it is a big deal mainly because HE was the one who said he couldn't make it earlier. It would've been one thing if YOU had said you couldn't meet until a few days later then sold it to someone sooner.

I might have offered him the option of coming earlier first, just stating that I really needed to sell it and someone had made an offer, but that's because I'm a nice guy. Most of the time.

As long as I was notified before leaving for the appointment, I would have been fine with it. If I had shown up for the appointment to find the car gone, I would have thrown a nutty!
When we were looking for a car for our daughter, I saw a rare used low mileage Impreza on the website of a dealer about 45 minutes away from our house. I called to make sure it was still on the lot, only to be told that the buyers had just driven it away minutes before our arrival about an hour later. I honestly think we saw it pulling out of the lot as we were pulling in...I was not surprised given how hard it is to find used Imprezas with less than 50kmiles around here. There was nothing for us to do other than get a nice dinner while we were out...ended up buying her a new base Impreza a week or two later after being stymied by the used market, and I'm glad we ended up going that way.
Impossible to know how truthful the dealer was being in this case...I'm sure negotiations could have been in progress to sell that car when I called, but I wouldn't fault them for not telling me if the papers had not been signed yet and the car was, strictly speaking, still on the market.
