I have a 2009 Tacoma with the 3.0L V6. It takes a Wix 51348 I believe. Currently I have a Pure One blue can on it, but a while back I ran a NAPA Gold/Wix 51515. It BARELY fits the truck, clears by a few millimeters, but it works fine. I noticed no difference in the truck while it was on.
On Wix's website, the 51348 and 51515 have identical specs in bypass and so forth, with the 51515 having slightly higher burst pressure. It also appears the 51515 is (or was) the TRD fancy filter (or at least identical in size). My local Toyota parts counter says I can interchange any of the Toyota filters with no worries. I would kind of like to use the 51515's in the future, as I think it evens out my oil usage (6 qts instead of 5.5).
However, on Purolator's website it specifically states they will not honor any warranty on the filter if I use anything other than what they state. I traded some emails with Wix, and in the end they said the same thing--they will only warrant what they have validated.
I see a lot of people using oversize filters. I've never had an oil filter fail, so should I worry about using a different filter? What about my truck's warranty? I know I can't really use a parts counter guy's "word" against Toyota if I had a failure. Are most people using a larger filter out of warranty anyway? Is it silly anyway since I am still running 5k OCIs?
