Hey Everyone:

So I want to change my air filter setup in my Santa Fe to an Amsoil EAA filter.

Amsoil doesn't carry an EAA filter for my application so I was thinking about dumping the top half of my air cleaner box and replacing the pipe going from the throttle body to the MAF then to the top of the Air cleaner box with a solid style tube and have an Amsoil Conical type EAA Filter on the end which rests inside the bottom half of my air filter box.

Ideas, Input?

Also seeing as I'm not a racer and have never done this before, do I buy all these items as a kit or separately? The rubber tube thingy that connects the TB, MAF, and filter all together.

The reason I want to do this is because on my UOA's using the OE cotton style filter media and the Wix one which is similar my Silica is still higher than it should be on the reports and I want to bring this down so that I can go longer OCI's.

Thanks in advance to all.

Here is a picture to make my explanation make a little more sense...

Just as you see above that is my setup. I could clamp it to the MAF but I wanted to run it to the bottom half of the air box so it has a cooler air source away from the engine.

The desired outcome isn't performance but superior filtration to cut down on my insolubles and high Silica levels showing up in my UOA's so I can safely extend my OCI's further than I have already. My TBN/Tan/Fuel Dilution/Moisture/Wear Metals are all excellent except for the SI & Insolubles which Terry thinks is bad air filtration. I have tried to find a paper based filter that fits my Santa Fe but have had no luck, everyone just carries this stupid cotton gauze one.

I know it's not a leaking intake gasket or unfiltered air leak as I have gone over the engine with a fine tooth comb to ensure it is the air filter.

Other people on some Hyundai forums have had similar UOA's with these cotton air filters so I think it's just a poor design IMO.

StevieC,

Try a NAPA Gold filter, it breathes more than standard filters.

Am putting one in now on my Saturn.

heat may still radiate in from above. Youd need to fully evaluate with at least a scangauge... I'd venture to guess than other than a bit of "ram air" effect, youll have mostly a warm air intake.

AC Delco air filters won a head to head test on this very site on an intro page I used to see on BITOG for about a year, against a long list of competitors.

I checked them out already... Cotton Gauze for my model, so I'm going to have to pass. Don't want anymore of this material. Want a paper one (which doesn't seem to exist) or I want to go the route of adding a conical filter.

That's ok... I can monitor this with my ScanGauge as I know what my average readings are from my MAF right now.

If worst comes to worst I could take out the air filter that is there now, find a conical to put inside and come up with some sort of piping that allows me to connect to the hole in the upper portion of the filter box. So that the Conical filter is inside the existing air box. Then it would be shielded from the engine heat.

Thoughts ???

Thanks Saturn_Fan - I'll take back my NAPA Gold tomorrow!

Will pick-up an AC Delco.

No I haven't are the similar to AFE, or Amsoil? or are they an OE replicator and would most likely carry Cotton-Gauze as well?

I placed an order online just now for a bunch of stuff that I need for my vehicles and friends/family etc.

This is the type of filter I got...

It's like the one in the front, on the lower right Tapered-Conical. It has a 3" mouth on the bottom (not shown) that will attach to the hose I already have but with a 3" metal pipe extension which I can purchase here locally.

I think this will be a good filter and will give me the SI/Insoluble readings I'm looking for on my UOA's so that I can safely extend my OCI's to the 20K KM (12K mile) numbers I'm looking for.

Comments ???

I have tried OEM, Wix, Fram all of which seem to yeild the same results. Currently installed is an OEM.

I think the Amsoil EAA filter I purchased will do what I need it to do...

Why didn't you get the AEM dryflow or AFE dry filter, at least you can wash those?

Loobed why would pulling in hot air decrease mileage? Since the pcm will typically keep the A/F ratio locked unless at WOT, and hotter air would me less dense air and therefore less fuel. Is there something I'm missing in that assumption? Plenty of people run "cold air intakes" which are effectively hot air intakes like this would be and see no decrease in gas mileage.
