Super Tech filters are not an option - I checked with Champion Laboratories to see if they made it in the larger size now suggested by VW for our engines. A simlar filter to the Super Tech line (except with more pleats) is the STP. At $3.59 (Autozone) for the S3569 it's not the deal a $2.07 Super Tech would be if they made it for our application.quote:

Actually I have yet to see an E-core in the 3387 size. I have a 3614 cut apart but it isn't the same so I won't post it. I'm not sure if Champion plans on making an E-core 3387.quote:

Is it possible to upgrade that filter study with the new ST Ecore?.. afterall.... that is what's on most Wally World ST shelves now.
The STP part number they gave me was S3569. Good catch on the mis-match of bypass settings for a VW. I'll confirm with Champ Labs the correct part number for a 1.8T application and report back.quote:

This filter is a typical Ford filter ..which is available in a variety of lengths and can diameters with the identical or near identical gasket sizes. S3569 xrefs to a 51452 in Wix ..which sports the exact same 8-11 bypass valve. The only difference appears that this is suitable for a transmission application as well as an engine lube application. Otherwise that number is effectively an FL1A-oid.![]()
Does your VW use a filter with a 20-30 lb bypass or something? Otherwise there's Ford filters in any length you can handle ..up to 7" in length under the same thread/gasket size. Although in a ST ..you're probably limited to an ST8A.![]()
I believe it was on the show Motor Week where resident mechanic Pat Goss cut open a Group 7 filter and didn't recommend using a Group 7.quote:

Given a choice between Fram and Group 7, I'd use the Group 7. I've used them in the past without any problem. Whereas I had nothing but problems with Frams due to their weak/non existent ADBV before I realized it was the Fram oil filter and NOT the oil causing the horrible start up racket.

After posing the question to Champ Labs Hotline about the STP S3569 cross referencing to WIX 51452, which would not have the correct by-pass pressure setting, I received this reply:quote:

May I humbly suggest caution using Wix as the reference for bypass pressures? If you cross some of their filters for Chrysler applications with Purolators for the same engines (I looked at Neons, '98 V-10 2500HD pickup w/optional large filter, and standard V-8 pickups that year), you'll find that Wix all have the 8-11 or so bypass pressures. Purolator, however, lists completely different pressure values for those 3 filters. Now, it could be that Purolator is doing funny things, but it seems more likely to me that the Purolators are the proper specs and that Wix is just using the same rubber ADBV in all of them.

I've cut apart E-cores and they are IMO much better then Fram as well.quote:

So when you originally posted....
"Supertech filters are much better then Fram."
... you actually only meant the SuperTech 3387... since most SuperTech filters no longer fall under the tested design you demonstrated.
