Walking into part store just for oil filter.

I don’t want to say the store’s name, but I went to my local parts store and picked up four oil filters. I went to the register, checked out, and after I finished paying, I overheard the manager telling the cashier that he should have reminded me to use self‑checkout for buying filters only. The manager sounded angry at the cashier.

I turned around and asked why. The manager said corporate keeps track and wants them to sell oil and filters as a bundle as much as possible. If they sell just oil filters by themselves, the employees can get points against them and possibly get written up. I was shocked. It irritated me because I don’t like how the company pressures their employees like that. It honestly made me want to return the four filters I just bought and go to another store.

The last time I heard something like this was when they tried to make employees push fuel injector cleaner or get written up.

Yeah, contact corporate and let them know you think that kind of store operation is employee abuse. People buy what they want to buy, regardless of any arm twisting from store employees. All they can do is say they have a good bundle deal and leave it at that ... they shouldn't be expected to up sell everything to every customer.

That is the kind of store I would walk out of and never go back to.

Different story but a couple years ago I returned a part that I ended up not using to a parts store. The guy was irritated that I brought it back and said “we already ordered another of these after you bought it last week, and we don’t stock more than one”. I walked out after that return and have never set foot in that store again.

I am not that surprised by this story, in that I fully expect retailers to try to get me to buy things that I am not really there for. I can’t imagine that parts store chains are good places to work, and suspect the days of the parts man being helpful and knowledgeable are long gone. Also, they can take their stupid oil and filter bundles and shove them, as they are never really any kind of bargain. Plus, many parts are Chinese garbage.

The oil’s I have been buying at Walmart are about $30 for a 5qt jug. The bundle at AAP which gets me the Carquest Premium is $38 which works the same. I think last time I got a Carquest Extended Performance in the bundle so that was a deal.

For me it depends if I have an oil filter supply for that vehicle already and if any rebate programs on the oil.

Another crappy part of that policy, the more that do self checkout, the less clerks we need or corporate wants to pay for. I have some busy AAP and AZ by me then others where I barely see any activity

Never seen a self check out in a parts store.
When I was on my quest to find Valvoline Restore and Protect Fuel System Cleaner at my local AutoZone, the check-out line was lon. Then I noticed one of the "stations" had a self check-out sign on it. Used it and was out quickly instead of waiting for an employee to finish finding parts for others, then ring me up. I rarely go to any parts' stores, so couldn't tell you how long self check-out had been available..

It’s was auto zone, dang I hate to boycott autozone because of their corporate policy. Autozone location is every where like within 5
Miles from each other and I really like their STP line.

AAP is very far.

I think I just mind my own business, I go there for 1 thing, what they doing is not my business, can't give up Autozone 🤣🤣

With all the recent unavailability with oil filters, I fell compelled to walk into the store just to inspect the filters. Looking at Walmart's site I see a lot aren't available, so I need to rethink, and the only way to make sure that I get one that is made in USA is to look at it first.
