a retired but very smart relative in cape coral has purchased a smart talk home plan from Wal Mart and can't get it working. IIUC this is effectively a tethered cell phone where you plug a box into the wall - not phone jack - and it transmits to a nearby cell tower as if it was a cell phone. You then plug in a house phone into the box, not to a phone jack, and that is your phone. $15 per month, $99 for the box. Everytime she uses it a voice operator comes on and said not installed yet. Am I missing something? BAD cell phone tower or not in range? I think ATT or Verizon. Comments?

I use the standard Straight Talk plan and have been totally pleased with it. Do not expect any customer service though. They usually speak pretty rough English and i believe they are out of India. I have never had much luck with ATT or Verizon customer service either as they all are awful so not much of a loss. My phone service is much better though. I recall ATT advertising the least dropped calls. I could not remember ever using them and not having a dropped call anywhere I was in the country. With my Straight Talk it is very rare probably went 8 months before dropping a call way down in valley in middle of nowhere in NC while driving.

I'm using NET10, same exact thing as straight talk and am very pleased with it! I've had AT&T for years and didn't realize how much better service could be and nowhere near as many dropped calls, all for HALF the cost!

I have been looking at Straight talk to reduce my bill. I didn't realize that some of their phones were on Verizon's towers.

However ... I only pay $50 for my current plan, so I'd be saving $5, if that, a month.

I got on a special deal with ST for $30/mo unlimited everything normally $45/mo. Great phone service but lousy customer service. Want to upgrade phones but don't want to risk losing current rate with them. Ends up being a little over $32/mo with taxes and everything.

They are in Philippines and Florida.

The ones in the Philippines are easier to understand.

Except data. 100 MB is all they allow with that plan. Simple Mobile, Straight talk and others is a much better plan *IF* you need/use data.

100 MB of what?

I have a 3G flip phone. I can text, pictures, video, web, e-mail, im , unlimited calling. What else is there?

I just set up straight talk home phone box from walmart $98 and 15 dollar/month for unlimited calling nationwide. I ported my dad's home number from comcast voice to this. it took two business days. my dad is very happy with the service as it uses verizon cell networks. he has a huge cell phone tower nearby so he gets excellent signal.

OP, sounds like the straightalk home phone is not activated. if she's hearing a recording message then she did not activate the home box. I believe you dial *22890 from the home phone and wait for the activation to go through the box. then the message will say your home phone is now activated. once activated, I believe customer service will come on the phone and test your box to see if it is working. also, you can activate your straighttalk home box through straighttalk.com tell your relative to go through the steps online when they register the box.
