Went over my maintenance records and was shocked to find I hadn't changed my air or cabin filters for 3 years and 60,000 miles! (Time flies when you are old) Changed both the air and cabin filter today. The air was bad but the cabin was trashed!

I forget CAFs too, but the dead mouse smell would have made me change it sooner. I had a coupl bite the dust in the heater system of the F-450 a couple winters ago-nothing like dried mouse chunks blowing out of the vents for a few months!

My record is 110K miles on an air filter until it tripped a code. It didn't look particularly dirty. But sure enough, you couldn't see light through it!
The cabin filters, on the other hand, were filthy at 15K.
I believe people overmaintain their air filters. They're expensive. Nothing horrible will happen if they look okay and are left in longer.

I agree! I like to leave my engine air filters in longer than most people do because every time you remove it you’re running the risk of allowing more dirt to get into the intake system. Plus the longer you leave the filter there the better it will work. If the engine is running properly and the MPG is still good then the air filter is still good to go. That being said, I just looked at my maintenance book for my Civic and the air filter has almost 100,000 km on it now so I’m going to change it today. My Corvette is still on the original air filter with 106,500 km on it and that will be changed very soon (along with the original coolant and cabin filter)
