Maybe I'm just overly suspicious

First thought was, there's a guy that is liquidating some slow/non-moving inventory.

Then I saw the vendor: guangzhouchaolong. Canton China.

What happened Cujet? Sounds like a good story!

If it is fake, the seller can be reported. Of course he never really states that it's "genuine"....just "OEM Quality". Ask him point blank if it's genuine. If he doesn't answer, you know the answer.

It's a very interesting story, and, no, I did nothing wrong at all. It was back in 1989, before they allowed private aircraft into the city. We, the flight crew, were arrested while performing a "pre-flight" inspection on the company Gulfstream GIII, one day before departure.

The reason for the arrest was not clear at the time, One Day and $7500 later, we bribed our way out of the worst jail you could ever imagine.

Come to find out, the principal passenger we had flown into China was involved in dialysis on political prisoners. (unknown to us) and we now speculate there was organ harvesting going on.

We were arrested by the Chinese military. The principal passenger was involved with the local government. Some internal conflict was the crux of the problem.

To make matters worse, the pilot had a heart attack due to stress and kept it secret. On departure, we sat motionless for nearly 5 minutes with the engines at full power. Making as much noise and smoke as possible. The overstressed pilot was so annoyed with the Chinese, every muscle in his body was distinct! His hand on the throttles, jamming them full forward. The idea was to annoy the 1000 Chinese troops stationed around our aircraft, while not exceeding the 5 minute "take off limit" on engine power. (from my point of view, it was rather funny) And the principal passenger came up to the cockpit wondering what we were doing. About that time, the pilot released the brakes and he fell backwards kind of hard. Could not have happened to a nicer guy......

What a story. I know you fly lots of big wigs around. But, Any Mainland Chinese capable of chartering a jet, is prolly not squeaky clean.

Define counterfeit. If it was some poorly made looking thing claiming to be a M1 filter (that was from china) I would call that counterfeit.

I would consider this to be generic. Based off one item, but made and sold for less. Never heard of this brand here on BITOG.. then again i dont know much about BMWs.

After a quick google search of the brand, $17 seems reasonable.

It is a well-known German brand of filters, not just for BMW, but Mercedes, Audi.....etc. The odds are quite high that this is a Chinese counterfeit, branded as Hengst.

Hengst is the most common manufacturer of BMW brand oil filters, they just don't print the BMW part number on the filter when it is sold as an aftermarket.

When I mean counterfeit, I mean it is manufactured by the Chinese to look like a Hengst filter but it is not. They do a lot of that, in my profession I have seen some very good counterfeits produced by the Chinese. Right down to the last detail.

And I can buy genuine Hengst filters for $7, so that isn't a good price especially when warned about any customs fees being my responsibility

If in fact it is counterfeit, they did an excellent job with all the detail. The "made in Germany" on the filter and the box. All the german gibberish. Looks very very legit. lol

In Aerospace, one of the counterfeit mitigation strategies used is to control of where parts are purchased. If you buy parts out of the back of a van down by the river, you get what you get.

Yup, that's pretty much par for the course with some of these counterfeit items. Scary eh?

Chinese counterfeits are down right scary in their complexity and accuracy. There is a lot of stuff out there that can be bought that isn't legit and can be traced to China.

Thanks for the intel. That is a great story and one you'll probably never forget. Better to have interesting experiences and live to tell about them versus leading a dull existence. Stay safe!
