I had the unfortunate experience to ride in 2009 Beetle in Miami Beach this weekend....Accelation,ride,and the a/c were just horrible...The POS has been back to the VW dealer 4 times in 6 months for headlights blowing out...They still have not found the problem...Why anyone would spend 20K bucks for that ugly looking POS baffles me...The owner [a friend of a friend] realizes now she should not have bought that POS..
We got into a taffic jam to going back to the garage where my car was parked...I decided to just get out and walk back to the garage [6 miles] just to get out of that POS.

Saw a brand new Prius today and I could not believe how disgusting it looked...It looked almost as bad as the Beetle.
My neighbor has a 2004 Prius...The 2004 looks a lot better.

The 06+ Civic Coupe is pretty cute, I think.
I had one, loved it (go great mileage on the highway with it), and it always turns my head when I see one on the road.

I married into an 02 Jetta TDI. 80,000 miles when we sold it. She bought it new and we met when it had 6000 miles on it. Both front wheel bearings, (2) Automatic transmissions (2) bouts of Carbon build in the intake (2) sets of glow plugs (1) set of injectors (2) injector wiring harnesses (3) nuetral park safety switches which left us stranded and host of other stuff I can't or don't want to remeber. I rarely even drove it and we maintained that thing better then any car we have ever owned.
I got the VW spec oil, I think it was 505.01 on line since I couldn't find it around here. You could tell the carbon was starting to build up because the MPGs would fall off to the low 30's high 20's.
If you know anything about them, or don't want a labor of love
get yourself a good MPG gaser.

It's starting to look like the TDI is out of the picture. She told me the other night that she still want's to get a beetle though. I guess the option's that we have are the 1.8t, 2.0, and 2.5.
First priority for me would be safety. That would rule out the little baby cars like the Yaris and Civic. Then reliability. That would rule out anything made by VW.
So that leaves Lexus. 5 star safety ratings plus proven reliability.

Here is a very popular SUV that has a problem (and I've seen it many times) SUV with 5 stars

I honestly can not see how a Beetle can hold up in a crash...The end result would be all the passengers would end up like a crushed beetle...The Beetle looks like garbage can.
I very rarely see Bettles out on the interstate down here though I do see them on the surface streets...Red seems like a popular color for them.
Make sure she does not mind spending her days off at the VW dealer.

True that Bill! I got Tboned at an intersection by a Tractor/trailer that was doing 45-50mph and walked away but totalled the car. Anyway, I think it is called inertia. A light car will get smacked around in a collision while a heavy car will just sit there and crumple. Besides weight, I think how sticky your tires are would be a factor as well.
Bill, I'm enjoying my Saturn right now and plan to do a clutch sometime in the future and thats about all I think will go wrong, besides the increase in oil consumption. I hope my next car is a 5 speed Corolla like yours, so if you ever decide to sale, please post it up on here
btw, I just found a 2000 white 5 speed on craigslist with about 200k. I would love to go ahead and check it out but I don't need a car (but a backup would be nice since I'm a courier), but extra insurance and a place to store it would be a hassle and Im trying to save up for a home anyways.
The 1998-07 Corollas look nice but it seems the newer they are the heavier and worse mileage they get. Plus a light car is kinda cute isn't it!?
My sister drives a Cobalt and it could be considered cute I guess.
These two if equipped with manuals would be peppy, fun to drive cars with better than 35mpg hwy. Can't you tell I just love 4dr econoboxes.
