I suspect not. If you look over the years nice wagons were available and no one bought them. There was a TSX wagon, Volvo sold wagons until recently, BMW has wagons they can import. VW sold wagons not that long ago. No one wanted them.

Its along the same lines as everyone here complaining about where are the cheap simple cars, but no one here bought a Sentra or a Mits, and Suzuki gave up and left years ago for the same reason.

I understand your point and cynicism, it's fair. I think, however, that we have finally woken up to the point that Ross Perot made years ago when he talked about that "giant sucking sound." It could be it is just a farce, and another concern about trade, but it could also be a legitimate point. If it isn't national security, and is trade rooted, as you suggest, why lie about it when most of the public now seems to accept that free trade is only really free when you are trading with peer countries with similar legal and civic values?

I try to always be open to well-reasoned counterarguments as a way to learn.

There are plenty of industries that your analysis is completely correct. However respectfully I disagree that it applies to the US auto industry, at least as defined as the legacy 3. From the Chicken tax intended to shelter the US from offshore trucks, to hand outs to build dispersed plants during the cold war which was a direct benefit to the OEM's, to the bail outs in the GFC to the thankfully now ended EV tax deductions, to the giant 179 tax deduction which is directly targeted at the legacy 3.

Not to mention the Legacy 3 would cancel a US supplier at the drop of the hat to buy for a penny less from off-shore, and in the recent global trade war they were one of the first to be given waivers.

The US auto industry has been coddled for decades, current EV restrictions is just a continuation.

I’ve seen rumblings of VW bringing the regular Golf back to the US once manufacturing moves to Pueblo Mexico in 2027. Final decisions of course may depend upon the haphazard tariffs changing from day to day.

I didn’t hate the Jetta rental. Not that I liked it but I was too busy missing my Tesla so maybe I was a bit jaded. Fuel economy seemed OK for what it is. Sound system was trash though.

That 1.5T Jetta got 41 mpg @ 75-80 fully loaded down when she and I drove 1600 miles from Az to Tn in March 2025. Her S model was $22k +/- so a high level audio system wasn't expected.

So VW, this wouldn't sell here?
