VW Filter placement

Well, it discouraged me from frequent replacements. I replaced it about a year after I got it. It took that long for me to steel myself for the job.

It's been on that filter now for a couple years, and someone else now has the vehicle.

Not quite, although that's as good an excuse as any. A buddy had a use for it for his spouse and daughter learning to drive, and I wanted something different.

I hope the factory made the darn filter BIG (either in size or at least total pleat surface area) so you didn't have to change it often! That might offer at least some consolation.

TC, I totally agreed on what you've said. So what's your recommended interval for filter change?

Mason1125, I’ve typically preferred to change-out air filters 10K miles earlier than called for on my rides, namely because I didn’t mind a little extra cost and effort in that regard, on the assumption the engine might breathe a little easier near the end of its (shortened) life. I’ve only changed my Passat air filter once, but I concluded at the time that changing it out more than 5K sooner than called for might be a waste – it simply wasn’t all that dirty at 45K miles when I checked it.

Yep, it's kind of ironic that I can do both G air filters in well under five minutes, compared to the Audi 200 procedure. If I did learn something from the Audi, it's that I can leave it alone and all will be fine. There's no point in replacing them way too early, even if I can get them cheaply!

for the 2.0T's, the ea113 based engines have this issue (which also includes the Golf R).

ea888 based 2.0T's (CCTA & CBFA) don't have this stupid airbox design.

Plus, with the VW filters, since it depends on the expanded foam as a seal, if you crack open the seal, it may not seal as properly the 2nd time, which can lead to a P0171 code
