Does anyone have a picture (or description) of exactly where the final drive is located on a 2000 VW GTI 1.8T - 01M 4-spd. auto tranny?

I have searched my Bentley manual thoroughly, & I can not find a good picture of the location of the final drive. The final drive itself is shown in several places, but there is not a good picture showing where it is on the transmission.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The final drive is right behind the transmission, where the driveshafts connect to the diff. Is this the description you need?

If you want to check the lube I think you need a VAG-COM or VW computer to read the level.

Wavinwayne, what are you talking about?

The final drive is that big round thingy that your axles bolt to.

The final drive housing is a square looking box located on the back of the transmission. It truly is the part that your axles attach to.\

If you'll give me your e-mail address I'll send you a exploded view.

It's physically part of the trans...hence the term transaxle. You will see a round, black differential cover facing the rear of the car on the driver side of the transaxle. This is the approximate location of the final drive in relation to the transaxle. The final drive contains the differential and the drive gears that sends power out to the CV shafts. To check the final drive lube you have to pull the speed sensor out and use the gear shaft as the lube level indicator. VW didn't make this an "easy task" per se. It would've been nice of VW to put drain and fill plugs so we could easily check/drain/fill the final drive. Supposedly the final drive lube is synthetic, so the lube level should remain "full" until it is changed out. I plan on changing mine out at 30K when I do the ATF fluid and filter. I'll do a write up then.

Crap!!!

I meant to ask about the location of the speedometer drive gear, not the final drive.......dooooh!

bad wavinwayne, bad!!!

If anybody knows where to locate the speedometer drive gear on my car, I'd appreciate it. Sorry for the confusion I created.

Thanks.

The speedo drive gear is part of the speed sensor or vice versa. It's located on top of the trans if you are looking at it from the engine compartment. It has a black "plug" on it and is held on with a bolt. At least that's what it looked like on my old 2001 01M trans...not sure if VW has changed it any since.

I found this picture online. The question in the box is the other guy's, not mine.

The picture is from a 2000 TDI automatic. I'm assuming the sensor would be in the same place on my 2000 GTI 1.8T automatic.

I'll take a look at lunch & let you all know what I find.

I found another picture, which shows where the -G22_ vehicle speed sensor is. The speedometer drive gear is supposed to be underneath the -G22-.

The 2 pictures in my last 2 posts seem to agree with each other. I think I've got it fingered out now.
