I have just purchased a VW for the first time and recommends using VW 503 or 504 oils.
Can anyone provide advice on what this spec is based on? I am guessing it may be based on extended oil change intervals (15,000km).
The car I have is twin charged ie both turbo and supercharged.
Can anyone recommend what their top 5 synthetic oils are, and whether they may or may not meet VW 504 spec?

EDIT: Should also say the car has direct injection

Probably a handful of others.

It would help if you just told us what car it has and what engine is equipped.

Thanks for the reply

The car is a VW Polo GTI with a twin charged 1.4L engine.

Just been doing a bit of reading, it seems like low SAPS are important for direct injection motors to keep valve deposits down.
What are the best oils in this regard?

Feel free to make suggestions.

Those VWs are really finicky about their oil I guess. That's why VW has all these super-duper standards. Experiments to see how far you can go before having to replace the oil are probably uncalled for.

Makers like VW should have charts of tested engine oil coupled with the approval numbers like the 503 and 504 you mentioned.

Like this, they cover up everything needed to be know about the oil. All you have to do is confirm the approval VW engine oil numbers, search for a list of oils with these numbers, look up the right viscosity from the owner's manual and follow the change interval related to the driving condition you're on (found in the owner's manual).

Your best choice is finding a VW community to find those lists. No disrespect to the beloved BITOG. You most of the time need a brand specific specialized source when it comes to European cars to get such lists.

Thanks for the responses.
Now that I understand a bit more about the VW504 spec, I suppose what I would like to know is, have you guys had issues with deposit build up on intake valves in direct injection engines.
I am thinking of taking the valves out after 60,000kms to inspect and then polish the [censored] to an absolute mirror finish, to try and prevent it.

You really need to join a VW forum for your car. They are very useful places. If you go there, you will find that just about every Audi and VW DI engine up to this point has severe DI deposit issues. Some have tried a catch can to prevent it but I have seen nothing confirming that this is keeping the intake valves clean.
