I'm looking for an upsize for the VQ30 in my 1996 Nissan Maxima. The recommended Wix filter Is #57356. I would really like to try the 51128 at 5.2" X 3.66" But am concerned that the flow rating is only 7-9GPM. Does anyone know what a twin overhead cam V6 actually flows through the oil system? Would 9GPM be enough? I also like the higher bypass setting and honestly wouldn't mind none at all, as it never gets below 30*, the typical low is in the 50s, and I run 5W/30. If the flow rate is a big concern I can run the W1344, but at that price I would just as soon run hte stock filter.

My daughter uses the Napa 1182(same as the Wix 51182) on her '00 Honda Civic and the 51182 crosses over to a Baldwin B7042 and that is what I run on my S2000. My S red lines at 8600 rpm with 90 psi of oil pressure and that filter is great on my S, I won't go back to the smaller oil filter on my S. My UOA are better with the larger(over twice as big) oil filter.
Here are some pics of three filters for the S

That sounds like a good omen for me then. I'm not familiar with the Honda's, what configuration and displacement are they?

I'd like to see the information that supports that statement; can you provide the data, please?

Here is a post from another thread on maxima.org. http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generation-maxima-1995-1999/658913-larger-oil-filters.html

OK, here's what I found while changing my oil. The gasket surface on the engine measures 72.39mm O.D.. The 1182 Napa filter is 72mm O.D.

The closest obstruction is at the 5 O'clock postition and I measured short at 33mm from the threaded nipple. 33mmX2=66mm+20mm(nipple)=86mm O.D.. The 1182 Filter measures 93 mm O.D.. This means It will be a close fit, if at all. Basically, if I measured 3.5mm short it will fit. I wont try until I Change my oil in 3K, So if anyone wants to try first post your results please.

The 1344 filter should definitely fit.

----------seal OD-----can OD-----can HT
Stock----64mm------65mm------87mm
1344----63mm------82mm------103mm
1182----72mm------93mm------132mm

If your measurements are accurate, then it won't fit. Diameter of the can is too large.

I'll trial fit first, and die grind if needed. Its just a thick spot above the pan rail, no oil passages or anything. I should only need to remove ~2mm if anything.

I live in bfe with only a Napa in town. I could drive 25 miles either way for fram or purolator, but would rather not. I'm not too worried about modifying my car in this manner.

You gotta love living in bfe.

j/k Not trying to tell you what filter to use, you should use what you want. However, if you might be interested in a Pure One, Amazon has some very solid/low pricing on P1 and if you can get an order to $25, free shipping. Food for thought for folks living in bfe.

asand1, apparently nobody who responded above is concerned about the flow rate.

But we don't know if the Wix 51182 will fit on the VQ30DE due to the can diameter. Please let us know your results if you try.

Went to NAPA and picked up an 1182. This thing looks bigger than a Chevy 350 filter. I paid $8.19 at the NAPA in BFE here, so I'm sure its cheaper in other locations. which i think is cheaper than a stock sized K&N that filters less.

Will install next OCI.

You'll have to cut it open and post pixs after you use it ... would like to see the guts and know how much media area it has.

Will do. I'm keeping the smaller filter element for comparison measurements.

I don't have any pic's of a 51182 filter but I do have pic's of a Baldwin B7042 that is the same size as the Wix 51182(Napa 1182) filter. I also have pic's of the stock Honda filter for the S2000 and a Napa(Wix) for the S2000. See how much smaller the Napa filter paper is compared to the Honda filter.
I would like to see how the Napa 1182 filter paper compares to the Baldwin filter.

That 1334 canister is also shorter than the OEM filter. Ill Measure the depth of the element and post tonight.
